dirty south drum rolls
dirty south drum rolls
what s up fam, i was hoping someone can give me some pointers on how to do dirty south drum rolls on the fx6. thanx
Re: dirty south drum rolls
Set the timing(1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4). Press the "roll" button and set up your pads and hit'em... Then if you make a slight mistake, go to micro edit and erase or move as needed...

no
that would be redundant...
When you set the roll it automatically quanitizes it to the tempo for whatever value you set!

Re: dirty south drum rolls
whats up big bro i think i got it now. this might seem crazy but peep this .i never knew i could use the pads on something other than tack 10 the drums. i thought in order to use multi sample i had to put it to the keys, but after really lookin into the pad controller section i see you can assign the pads to diff tracks. now ithink aboutit that was stupid to say to turn off the quantise off . but anyway i tried a couple of rolls on 1/24 1nd 1/32 and it felt kinda right. but since i got your ear iwas wonderining how do you use quantise on your tracks or tracks with samples.

I don't really sample all that much.....
But it depends on WHAT you are sampling.
If it is a short sound like a drum kick or horn hit then I MAY quanitize depending on the sound itself. I usually only quanitize kicks and snares. That is how I keep it from FEELING like it has NO swing. A lot of people (MPC users in particular) don't realize that SWING has less to do with the MAIN drums like Kicks and Snares...and MORE to do with the OTHER percussion sounds you may use. As a general rule I almost ALWAYS quanitize my kick and MOST of the time my snare/clap too. The reason why stuff sounds robotic when a lot of people quanitize their drums is because they are doing ALL their drums at the SAME TIME in the first place, which means those sounds will be on the SAME TRACK, which means EVERYTHING gets quanitized as oppesed to just a FEW elements. This will take practically ALL the FEEL out of your beats. I know it takes longer and is much less fluent, but I record each sound ON IT"S OWN TRACK, ONE AT A TIME!
This works for me....might not work for you...
With LONGER samples it pretty much depends of HOW CLOSE I can get it to EXACTLY match the tempo of the song. If i get it DEAD on I may quanitize (again depending on the sound) but if not I will just record it "freehand"

Pay particular attention to the "Anniversary Steppers Groove" & the "Unchained Radio Intro"
Both of these tracks were done using JUST the fantom x6!!!
The anniversary song has some samples in it.
They BOTH use quanitization to some degree but they STILL have that MPC kinda swing to them...
Hope This Helps

Re: dirty south drum rolls
Ditto to what big bro said... I only use quantinzing on my kick and snares... Im a heavy sampler, and as long as I have the bpm's right, Im rocking... Now sometimes I may use the shuffle quantize at 57-66% for my drums and samples. It all depends on what I feel the track needs...
P.S. Just in case you didn't know, when you do quantize and you dont like how it sounds. Make sure you undo it before your quantize it again.

Re: dirty south drum rolls
whoa bigbrothermotown.....i definitely see where you're coming from, and your suggestions about how to get that 'feel' are valid.....but to criticize people for 'playing' their drumbeats on the pads seems a little strange to me. i'd say my best instrument is drums (on midi controller pads). you gotta admit there's something to be said for actually performing a drumbeat.
Re: dirty south drum rolls
thanx fam, this was really helpful . its getting me in the ballpark but i fully understand i have to experiment to get what fits me. im glad you guys were listening and helped me with my 2 threads in 1.... peace out.

Ldiles......
I'm definitely NOT criticizing people who use drum pads...I went and bought the Korg PADKontrol for just that reason (the fantom pads suck) Pad controllers are GREAT for doing drums and stuff. The point I was trying to make Is that most MPC users will tell you that it has a FEEL that you can't get anywhere else and that is simply NOT TRUE!!! Also when you do ALL your drums on one track It takes away FLEXIBILITY unless you plan on separating the sounds AFTER the fact which is a VERY tedious task....
It's ALL good....I'm not criticizing anyone....just offering MY insight...
After all...it's ALL about the music. There are SEVERAL ways to skin this cat. I figure the more I can learn from other people, the more "weapons of mass creation" I have at my disposal....

Re: dirty south drum rolls
BBM,
I agree that using separate tracks for drums is essential. I can't live without it!
I usually have 3-4 tracks with drums/percussion split out. Kicks, snare, and cymbals/hi-hat are a necessity, additional percussion is also common. There have been times that I have merged a couple of tracks, but only after I have my velocities and quantization happening and I'm ready to master.
I use both the pads and keys for manually inputting. I'm used to the pads from having a Roland R8 for many years. Hmmmmm, now that I think about it, I may be able to use it (I still have it) for inputting to the Fantom. I liked the pads on the R8.
You may have keyed me on to something here.

Re: dirty south drum rolls
Jburner, i've been tryin to figure out how to do the snare rolls w/ pitch changes as well. I figured out the multisample yall were talkin about, but i can't figure out how to load a multisample on the pads on a track other than track10. Can you have more than one pad track?
I did multisample w/ my snare that i wanna roll, and put it on track10 (which replaced all of the other drum samples i had loaded)

Re: dirty south drum rolls
You can change the track the pads are assigned to, but it can only control one track/channel at a time. But nothing is stopping you from just changing the track each time before you record.

Yep, change the track the pads control...
Then... Make sure your your drum patch (r. set) is pitch change able... For Rhythm set you have to set each note's pitch setting, under pro edit, unlike a patch that has universal pitch control for every note....
Then use the mod wheel thing and you can pitch shift the drums, and use the pads at the same time...
I am almost definite that it works...
If your using the 808/909 preset, the pitch change I think is set to zero for every note/key... Just go in and manually change the pitch setting and save...
