Yep I record the midi live into the ext. seqencer.

You can also just save the midi file (type 1) and export in to the seq as well.

can I save the midi files independently for each track, so I'd have 16 midi files?

That im not sure, havent tried this.... maybe if you solo.. (well mute) the individual tracks and save.... it may only save whats "playing"... give it a shot.

Alright guys, I've finally got the MIDI setup to work correctly with my X8 and Pro Tools (Digi rack 002).

For those still struggling to get their recorded MIDI to play back sound in Pro Tools follow these steps:

1. Connect Midi out from X8 to Midi In Digi 002
2. Connect Midi out 1 from Digi 002 to Midi In X8
3. MAKE SURE X8 stays in USB mode not MIDI mode (that was my problem...you'd think MIDI mode would be required to make this work but it's not)
4. Make sure you do all your Midi Work in performance mode
5. In Pro Tools setup Midi in Midi Studio
6. Make sure Midi Thru in Pro Tools is checked
7. Setup your Midi track and Aux track and you're done

You can hear and record midi and easily play back and hear what you recorded.

Hey,

I want to transfer my drums from my X6 to Pro Tools, with the snare, kick, etc, each on its own track.

I've recorded a Pattern for each section of the song that I've written. I've done a pattern for each drum (snare, kick, etc). I then recorded those Patterns into a 'Song'. So now, the kick for the entire song is on Track 12 and the Snare is on Track 13, etc.

Will I now be able to link up to Pro Tools via Midi and transfer those drum tracks over separately? The reason I ask is, when I click on 'Micro Edit' for one of the drum tracks, it only shows 'Ptn 007 Kick Verse', 'Ptn 008 Kick Chorus', etc. It doesn't show each individual thump of the kick for the entire song. Is this going to confuse Pro Tools, or will it be able to read the information contained within each of those Patterns, and lay out each kick for the entire song on its own track?

I'd try it myself, but I don't own Pro Tools, and hope that your advice and help can save me time and money when I go to the studio to start recording in a few weeks.
