A lot of Problems with the Mc-808 - someone else ?

Post by Zolo »

Hi there ;)
I am an 808 owner since more than 3 months now and I have some Problems with it. I just want to know if other people have same Problems ?

1. I had 4-5 times a total crash! Bevor the 808 crashes, i didn't used Midi, Sysex, recorded controller datas or too many notes in the sequenzer! I dont know why. But i am scared to use the 808 now live on stage
2. My 808 is noisy. Espacilly when I am using headphones, i hear some noises like from a Computer. For example I can hear the flashing of a number on the screen.
3. Playing Samples sounds not good! If i import a 44khz/16bit wav file it sounds less clean than the original! Same when resampling a pattern. If i use the "emphase" Funktion in the editor, it sounds much bether. But I haven't the time to emphase hundred of samples i loaded :(
4. I find no Ram working with the 808! Bought quality ram from mutec (they are specialized in sampler ram) but i doesnt work. I tried 8 different Rams of old computers. Only one work - a noname ram. But unfortunalty is it only 128 mb.

Someone else such Problems with the mc-808 ?
Best wishes

Hi and welcome to the Roland Clan.
You should contact your Roland Service or Dealer since I believe that some 808 were shipped with faulty/wrong AC adaptors causing the problems you describe. This was never told directly to me. It's just an assumption I make in regard the informations I gathered so you'd just better check it.

Rolands advice. Buy the MV8000. You'll love it.

Zolo...

I can confirm what fixthemix said about the power adaptor. The first batch shipped from Roland in Japan did not have the correct power adaptor with it, as I too had the noise problem on my unit, especially when using the "MIX IN" or "SAMPLING". A call to Sound Control (the store I bought the unit from) and Roland tech support confirmed this, so you should contact your local Roland dealer and try to get your PSU exchanged.

Hope that helps.

got mine for 400 dollars more than the mc-808. It was used of course. Store model. But was fully loaded and in great shape. If i had had to buy it new it still would have been on my wishlist.

you are right. I send my groovebox to Roland last year and they gave me another power adapter. Also they changed something on the motherboard.
Now the 808 is much less noisy than before.
The Ram is working now, too.

Thank you for the good hint.

If this is really Roland's advice, it's a bit rubbish! The MV8000 has been discontinued. Music technology moves at an incredible pace, you don't want to be hog-tied with yesterday's kit!

Yeah I'm having the same problems now with my MC-808 as of today, my 808 has become noisy on all of it's outputs LMono/R and Direct outs 1&2 and worse on the Phones output, no matter what cables i use (new ones).

I contacted Roland UK, they said all power supplies with current units are fine and are all new?

I also contacted my Roland dealer Sound Control, they said the unit sounds like it's faulty, so a replacement looks the likely option at present!!
