Re: 5080 patches
You can't. You can only transfer 256 at a time, and if you have a compact flash card, then another 256. You have to use the librarian using the PC or download the files to your card.
By the way, there are some awsome sounds in the 5080. I specially love the fantasia sound. It really makes the FX sound so nice and clear.
Warmest regards,
Musikman

5080 Patches
I noticed you said "Another 256"
I'm new to the Fantom x8.
Does this mean that no matter what size Compact flash card I buy the Fantom will only see 256 patches off the card?
In other words, I would like all 1024 patches on a card to choose from, or do they have to be loaded into the Fantom first?

Re: 5080 patches
you only have 256 user patches and 256 card patches
which gives you 512 xv5080 patches at any one time
what i did was load different groups of 256 to my card area, and copied the ones i liked to my user area, and went through all of the sounds from the xv 5080 like that, so now all the sounds from the 5080 that i liked are loaded up in my user bank

Gotchya.
So as I understand it now, The sounds really don't get played off the card, you have to load them into user memory of the Fantom to play them?
I guess I don't really need to buy the card because I could just use my computer doing the same thing.

Re: 5080 patches
not exactly
the sounds will play off of the card
but i personally just kept the sounds i liked and put them in my user area, i will use my card bank for personal patches that i create as well as new patches i may want to load
you could load the patches 256 at a time from your pc to your user area by copying the fans.svd to the roland/snd folder in the fantoms internal memory

5080 Patches
Maybe I should rephrase the question then.
I would like to keep all 1,024 5080 patches on one card and be able to select any patch from the card of all 1024 at will.
That's basically what I'm asking.
Can I do that if I get a card?
I used to have an XV 3080 and those sounds are sure bringing back some good memories.
To have just about all that back on 1 card sure would be nice.
Will that work?
And if so, what kind of card would you use just to have an archive of those patches? I don't think I would need a very large memory capacity card would I?
Thanks for helping me out. I just don't want to waste more money on a card than I have to. I've seen em for $19-$250.

Re: 5080 patches
Each card holds 256 patches only ..You need 4 seperate cards for 4 sets of 256 patches. 16Mb is all you need for patch storage. Larger capacity one is for sampling and related audio stuffs.
If you have a computer that hooked up to FX, you don't need to have memory card for this purpose.
What u have to do is.. bring up FX librarian , load XV patches in librarian format(.FXL file). You will see 1024 patches poped up in seperate window. Select patches up to 256 and copy them to clipboard. Then write them to librarian main window(that has write/read tab). You can audition any patch at this point. Write them to fX user area. That's about it. You can save 256 patches in main window as midi format file. Try organize patches in 4 groups and save each group in Midi format. So you can switch around the groups easily.

Re: 5080 patches
Roger:
in short, no, you can't have access to all patches at once, what you can do, is make folders on your card for each seperate set of 256, then switch them out accordingly, by using the file menu, copy one from the folder you made to the snd folder either in user area or card area, you don't need more than one card to do this, this is how i have mine set up, all my banks are on my card in separate folders...
when i want to use one i copy it to the snd folder to overwrite what's already there
but to answer your question, you can not scroll through all the xv5808 patches like you can the preset sounds on the fantom, because the os only recognizes 256 patches, i wish roland would change this with an os update to allow us to access more patches at once, but this goes back to the way the file system works, at first it's a bummer but you'll learn to get around it
you can do like i did, i mean, do you think you want access to every single sound from the 5080? if not, go through and copy the ones you want and save them to your user area, then they will always be available

5080 Patches
O.K. I get it.
I appreciate all your help.
It's pretty easy just to throw in the patches with the Librarian which is what I've been doing, so I guess I'll just keep doing it that way. It's time I start makin some music with this beast.
I'll buy cards if Roland figures out a way to have access to more than 256 patches at a time.
Thanks a bunch.

Re: 5080 patches
Ok, so when you move the SVD file to the root of the folder, what do you do with the original one that is there?

Re: 5080 patches
i would make sure i have a copy of it in it's own folder somewhere else either on the card or on my pc, once you copy a fans.svd to the root folder it will overwrite the exsisting one
Re: 5080 patches
Does the librarian or editor work in Peformance mode? That is, can I send a patch to a specific part (1 - 16)? All the librarian seem to do is load the patch user area of Patch mode.
I just want to load random patches in Perf. mode without the need to actually write the each patch to user/card mem.
Basically I just want use patches from various banks, saving the song as .svq (which saves the patches anyway) without actually writing the individual patches to user/card mem -overwriting any exisisting patches.
No go?

Re: 5080 patches
i can't help you there as i don't use the librarian yet, i only use a card reader and load my svd files that way...i'd be interested to hear the answer to this though
Re: 5080 patches
Thanks, I dont really use the librarian either so I was just curious.
Guess I will just keep swapping banks on the card. Its just that banks like Planet V that use multi-sample patches, you cant swap that bank out as the .svq file cant reference the multi-sample patch, so you have to swap another bank into user memory instead...which requires a reboot each time....oh well, I can deal with it.
Was just looking for a faster workflow...
