Roland's New Synth.. SH-201

Post by gspeed »

Well..its up on www.rolandus.com no high res pics or audio samples yet. Im sure as they get into NAMM, the video demos will be available for all to watch. Looks like a fun synth. Wonder how much $$??

Hmm..
Is it realy worth the hype?
its just another digital synth with a lot of controls on it.
okay maybe it has some special fx in it
but is`nt this just the same old technology repackaged as new?
I notice the roland propagana machine is going full blast with phrases like "analog style modeling"

Its a digital synth has nothing to do with analog...

Quinnx, I agree with you regarding the fact that it's not an analog synth but is very digital. Then again, I loved the days when each "parameter" had it's own knob, but I'm quite sure I don't want to return to the days of drifting oscillators that need to be manually tuned or callibrated every so often.

Analog kit sounds great in hindsight, but at the time it was a pain in the arse when it came to reliability and when it wasn't only guitarists who had to tune their instrument. ;o)

yes, it's digital, as are most of today's "analog"ish synth: they are virtual analog. But they sound ok, and are cheap and easy to operate :)

The only downside in the SH-201 is the lack of a vocoder.

Anyone knows the price tag?

Ho boy I went from ultra aroused to dissapointed big time with this new synth.

IT looks gorgeous, a real VA with lots of control and a 49 notes keyboard. Just what I was looking from Roland.

BUT no multitimbrality and minimal save space for patches ???? WTF ??
In 2006 this is unexcusable for a digital synth.

wereboar :

Yeah but if its digital they should say digital
and not try to pretend its something its not with words like Analogue modeling.

Overall..
All i see roland doing is taking old technology and repackaging it and putting a NEW! sticker on them.

And if you look realy closely you will notice there all cut down versions on what already is or was.

where going backwards here, i cant say im excited its all boring..
and there usb connetivity and file system is still as bad as ever,
Only usb midi? and maybe file transfere

this is all soooo last week...
I think where looking at attracting newbies who havent a clue about yesterday with this line of products.

Im starting to think even Korg Triton extreme offers more than what has been presented a nam 06.

The Look

Post by ctimmerman »

I will reserve my judgment on the sounds and functionality until more info is available, but....

I LIKE THE WAY IT LOOKS.

Reminds me of my first love. The Juno-106.

***EDIT***
Wrong board. Juno-G, not SH-201.

Post by Quinnx. »

well certainly not roland
because if i DID!?

You would all be overjoyed! with what there was
and not what is.. ;-)

What can i say....
except im not impressed
Maybe i should start my own dream machine company
I would make a fortune! (and a keyboard too)

and just to make you oldbees feel appriciated i will throw in a few bugs here and there so it will make you feel like it always has been.
I mean to say... I wouldnt want you oldbees to cark it with the shock of no bugs as this would kill my customer base for future upgrades later on, meaning...
I would finaly give you all those features that should have been there in version 1)
and make you pay for it twice.

The owner's manual: http://www.roland.com/products/en/_supp ... 8902&dsp=1

A hi-res picture:

For me, it looks awesome, and it should be so interesting if it sounds good. The only question I have now is how it will compare to the ION as both products lie in the same price range.

Best.

Edit:I forgot to mention that the hi-res pic is courtesy of the German Roland website

It looks like exactly what I'm after... I'll have to hear it though. I'm looking for something microkorg-style, but this has WAY more knobs & sliders...

Interesting virtual analog board.
Good feature is the real knobs(the one that has start and end point). Some VA synths have "software" knobs and hard to adjust in real time because of lack of feedback.

BTW, it is amazing that some people don't even know what the Virtual Analog is. What a dorf!!!

Here are a few more questions:
(1) How do you think the new SH-201 will compare to the JP8000/8080 synths? They are much cheaper now on EBay.

(2) It has been rumored that the new SH-201 is simply the VA part of the V-synth. One reason being that you get the same polyphony (10 voices) when you restrict to the VA part of the V-synth.
This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it will give an idea about what to expect. So what do you people think about that?

(3) Given the very limited number of user patches (only 32), could you just connect a USB flash drive and store more patches? The manual doesn't say anything about that, but is it safe to assume this is the case when you have a USB port?

Best.

Your wishing too hard here...
Historicaly roland have been moving backwards in development recently from my experience.

This is another step back
I dont see how putting more controls on the outside makes this synth any better than previous ones..
Its a fisherprice toy trying to attract newbies

its tecnology is not new
Your wish for usb connectivity will be disappointed because its usb midi Not USB.
The same is true with the so called NEW juno D or G or whatever its called, its usb midi.

its seems where getting less and less from roland because they dont have the will or the programmers to come up with any real new ideas becaue roland do what they do best.
They do not "Invent the Future"

They "re-invent the past"
They copy old technology rebadge as new
they copy old code and put it in a new box

Roland are loosing it big time
your fools to support this old stuff

I think the fantom and the v-synth is the best your gonna get
and they still need development.
