Sounds from the band Journey ?

Post by Waynester »

Hi everyone - i have the Motif ES7 and Fantom X8
i`m trying to program the patches for 2 Tracks by the band Journey that i`m doing in my covers band here in the UK

i`m taking a break from my fulltime job of playing Keys in a Bon Jovi Tribute Band... 7 years and i`m bored, lol
bloody sus4 chords!!

the 2 tracks are "Dont stop believing" and "Seperate Ways"
I have learnt all the keys parts, just need the correct sounds

anyone play these in their band?
or care to post their examples on here?
if not, no worries, i will try and perservere :-)

Thanks guys and gals

I'm interested too on some Journey patches. My band will be doing "Anyway You Want It". Examples or instructions on where to start to create the sounds are greatly appreciated!

Speaking of Bon Jovi, Wayne, would you care sharing some of your patches, please? I'm interested on "Livin' On a Prayer" and "You Give Love A Bad Name". These songs are currently on our playlist and I think I'm just using GM sounds which are not that great. I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Hey buddy

well i use my Motif ES for Bad name brass patch im afraid
the pad that descends down after the intro, i use my X8

for Living on a prayer i use my X8, i copied the live version sound Dave Bryan created, and not the cd version which he uses a nice analog strings patch..
all you need is simply a piano and strings combination, one of the strings is an octave higher....
for the stabby synth part during the verses, i use my Motif ES

i would send you the patch if i knew how, but as everyone knows on this forum, im probably the thickest person on it! lol

let me know how you get on

Hey Wayne,

Thanks for the quick response! I would love to hear your Bon Jovi patches from your FX!!! I can send you instructions on how to transfer your patches from FX. Do you connect your FX to a computer or do you use an external memory card?

Again, I really appreciate it.

Thanks,

I currently play "Separate Ways" with my X7 and I custom-tweaked one of the factory patches to get the sound. It's a performance because I layered the bass to sustain more, but it sounds dead on. I'm not sure how I can send just one patch though. It won't require any waveforms since it's part of the stock set. I could send you an MP3 of me playing the patch and you can decide if it's what you want.

I sent you an MP3 file of the patch being played. Hopefully it doesn't get degraded too much so you can get a good idea of what it sounds like. It sounds very good on its own but even better in a mix.

Hopefully your Inbox doesn't choke on it--it was 1.6M. :)

Wayne/Matt - There are a couple of ways to easily transfer patches from FX to your computer that I can think of. Make sure that you do a backup of your user memory first before performing the steps below so you can restore your data in case something goes wrong.

=Using external memory card (you will need a PC/MAC card reader)
1. On FX, press "MENU" button, press down cursor button three times to "File Utility". Press "ENTER" button. You should see the "File Utility" window.
2. Press the "F1" key (this makes sure that you are in the "User Memory"). Navigate to "\ROLAND\SND" directory using the cursor buttons. Hilight (select) "fans.svd" in the "\ROLAND\SND" directory using up and down cursor keys and press "F8" button (Copy command). You will see "File Utility (Copy)" window on FX.
3. Press "F2" function key (Card). Navigate to "\TMP" directory on the external memory card using the cursor keys. Press "F8" function key (Exec) button. This will copy the "fans.svd" file from user memory to the external memory card. Press the "EXIT" button.
4. Remove the card from FX and insert it in the PC memory card read. Copy the "\TMP\fans.svd" from the external memory card to your PC/MAC.
5. Attach "fans.svd" in your e-mail.

I've got to run but I'll send Option 2 later. Matt - can you also send your patches to me? Appreciate it guys! Ask away if you have any questions.

Thanks,

I read that post on how to copy the patch, but near as I can tell, that will copy *all* of my user patches and while that's not a big deal, if I send it to him he's going to have to replace his entire user bank with all of mine to get it. Also, although the patch is a custom patch it is used as part of a performace. What I really need to do is send just one performance and one patch. I think I can do that with the librarian, but is that the only way?

I think I'll start another thread for that part of it.

Who is Journey? Are they and English Band? Kind of like Radiohead?

www.journeymusic.com

Band from San Francisco USA, formed in the 70s with Neal Schon of Santana fame. Became internationally famous in the 80s with a series of huge Top 10 hits and platinum albums. Kinda waned in the 90s but still worshipped by a cult-like fan base.

Matt:

Could you tell a new X8 owner the factory patch name/number that you modified to get to the Seperate Ways sound?

Just purchased this instrument and don't know where to begin.

Thanks for your help,

Tony

Seperate Ways performance

Post by sbrinaz »

I actually play several journey songs in a band here in Arizona. Seperate Ways: I would love to get this performance...even if you have it saved in the librarian file format...I will figure out how to just get one performance over to the X8. I am sure I could copy and paste via the librairan and then install the whole thing etc...

Let me know as I am not happy with all the sound tweaking I did and not an expert there.

Journey & Bon Jovi patches

Post by The Shank »

You should check out the 80's Pop & Rock library that you can find here: http://www.playkeyz.com/80s_pr.html

There are many patches for tunes you mentioned as well as others in the same time period.
