Tyros 2

Post by Radon_22 »

It's arrived! Check it out here.

What do you guys think? Is it a G70 killer?

Q: Is it a G70 killer?

A: NO!!!

Many of those that have been waiting for this baby to come out have the following complaints:

-Still NO 76 key version (Lame when compared to the fact that both Roland and Korg have made this standard on their flagship arrangers)

-It now has Hard Disk recording BUT ONLY 2 TRACKS...once again LAME...why even include it...either at least allow 8 tracks or why add it...AND this is only a feature IF you are to ADD the HD...so it's not even included...it's an UPGRADE...LAME

-Still NO XLR input for the vocals...Arrangers like this and the G70 brag about their vocal harmonizors, and fully expect people to plug mics in...so why has the Tyros left this of AGAIN?

-No touch screen AGAIN...Both the Korg and Roland have made this standard

-No real faders to be used as organ draw bars...both Roland and Korg have this

-Etc

-Etc

-Etc

***The main thing they are hoping for is that their new sounds and realism will put them over the top, BUT all of them are starting to sound pretty darn good, and Yamaha simply doesn't want to give you any of the additional features that we have already seen on both the Korg and the Roland.

Pretty lame effort as far as I'm concerned.

Agree with Sam_vafaei, it's probably perfectly suited for Hi-tech dinner musicians of semi-posh Restaurants in dull suburbs where the Diners are hopelessly entangled in nineteen-fifties music such as Cha--cha-cha or Lollipop Boy. At least the G-70 got a bit of attitude.

No matter what.... 61 keys are just useless for high end arranger keyboards. It is Ok for kiddie keyboards to have 61 keys.
Can't even imagine a way to play 61 arranger keyboard except for playing Midi files.(I don't need keyboard... karaoke CD is just enough for that)

Please elaborate. Do it wisely and fast, there's a Fantom X6 lynch mob waiting in your front yard and I can't and won't keep them quiet forever. Yes, they brought a rope.

Only 61 DOES KEYS!

Well put, Don. I'd bet if we did a poll, there are a lot more X6/Xa users out there than x8.

A couple of things I noticed off of the bat about this thing, though:

* Sample playback- the G70 doesn't have this capability. A major oversight on Roland's part, IMHO. This limits expandability a bit.

* Video out- I'd rather have the ability to hook it to a PC monitor than have a touch screen. I like the fact that the Fantom doesn't do touch screens. (Maybe I'm the only guy on this board that gets sweaty palms when playing live, but I doubt it.)

*"Real" USB support: The G70, like the Fantom doesn't support USB storage.

*While it doesn't have drawbars (something I adore on the G70), the buttons below the display provide the functionality of drawbars.

I was unimpressed, however, with the sounds I heard on the Yamaha main site. I was a bit more impressed with these samples Same instruments/songs, but at a better sample rate.

Oh....
61 keys for "arranger" keyboard is considered insufficient. For synth workstation, it is not even a concern. Reason?
You gotta to hold or hit the chord keys all the time and it is very hard to use just one octave just for this purpose(try playing piano base line with one octave). If two octaves are used, you will have only 3 octaves to play anything. If you want to split 3 octaves to play 2 different instrument, it is very inconvenient.
Sampling is cool feature but I am not sure if it is that useful for arranger keyboard. The purpose of arranger keyboard is to create a song "on fly" right away, right now. Loading may take some time no matter what. And, why need a new sound to start with?? Not enough useful sound on board?
The same could be said of hard disk. For what? I used to have G1000 with 100mb zip disk. And never need to use all the capacity. Song style use only about 50K per style. Scroll thru those tons of styles and to remember which is which is not that easy either.
