Re: Got a Yamaha DX-7. Samples Anyone?
Nate,
That is cool... I used to have a TX7. There was a few really cool patches for the DX7, mostly I remember a really neat Fantasy Bell, slap bass and Rhodes patch. If you're interested, I have hundreds of patches for the DX7 in .SYX sysex format. I can email a ZIP file to you if you'd like. I also used to have a cassette tape hanging around somewhere that contained users patches... including a few exclusive banks by Dave Bristow and Peter Gabriel.

Re: Got a Yamaha DX-7. Samples Anyone?
Radon_22: I'll start sampling those patches. Thanks for the suggestions.
Dave: That's pretty cool! I'd be grateful for any patches you can provide. I found a whole bunch online too, but haven't had the chance to try any of them yet. This thing's been around for so long I'm sure you have lots of patches that I haven't yet found. As for those cassettes, are you referring to data cassette tapes? Wow! I haven't used one of those since the Commodore PET.
All: I forgot to mention that the original ROM cartridge came with the DX-7 as well so I also have the 32 patches on bank B of that cartridge. Those patches are...
01 PIANO 2
02 E.GRAND 1
03 E.GRAND 2
04 HONKY TONK
05 E.PIANO 2
06 E.PIANO 3

Re: Got a Yamaha DX-7. Samples Anyone?
OK... the ZIP file is about 7Mb, can you accept an email that size? (there must be nearly 20,000 individual patches in the syx files in this ZIP)
Yes, a data cassette. The number of times I would swear at the damned thing 'cos the bank load would fail during load-up due to a cheap and nasty cassette player (remember those lay flat on the table cassette players with the flip up cassette tray, piano style transport keys about the size and half the height of a shoe box).

Re: Got a Yamaha DX-7. Samples Anyone?
Hey Dave.
Yes, my server allows quite large messages. 7 MB is well under the limit. 20,000 patches!? Holy crap! That might keep me busy for a bit.
Wow, old data cassettes. That brings back some memories. Yes, that desktop, flip up cassette door, lever-style transport button cassette deck is exactly the kind I used to use on the Commodore PET to save and load my BASIC programs. Ah, quite nostalgic. I wouldn't wish those slow, unreliable devils on anyone though. Hehe. Now, the question is, how did you get the data from those cassettes into the TX-7? Was there some kind of mod for that? Who sold the data cassette deck? Did the TX-7 have a tape deck data port interface or something?

DX-7, 23 SYN-LEAD 1 Samples
Hello all.
I finished sampling the DX-7's patch 23 SYN-LEAD 1. The complete set of samples is 20 MB. You can download the zip file at
http://www.nathansheldon.com/fantom-x8/ ... LEAD_1.zip
Basic loading instructions:
* Back up your ROLAND folder either in your USER or CARD storage area (CARD is recommended if you have it).
* Copy the entire ROLAND folder inside the fmSYN-LEAD 1 folder into your USER or CARD storage space on the Fantom.
* Restart the Fantom.
* Load all samples from the SAVE/LOAD screen on your Fantom (if they didn't load automatically).
SAMPLE FEATURES:
* 3 velocity levels sampled.
* Each sample is about 4 seconds long with no loop points
* Every 3rd key from C2 to C7 was sampled at all 3 velocity levels.
* 3 Multi-Sample sets included in SVD file, 1 for each velocity level.
PATCH FEATURES:
* 1 Patch using all samples included.
* Modulation and aftertouch affect the sound in the same way they do on the DX-7.
* Uses velocity cross-fading and not TVF cross-fading (this uses 2 voices of polyphony instead of 1, but produces a better approximation of the real SYN-LEAD 1 sound).
The samples are in AIFF format. Of course, you can copy the .aif files into your /ROLAND/TMP/AUDIO_IMPORT directory on your Fantom and create your own Multi-Samples and Patches. Or you can use the samples on a different instrument (like a Motif or Triton).
The patch was a rather quick and dirty creation so it could probably be better. Since it has no effects applied (in keeping with the real sound of the DX-7) you'll probably want to add your own effects settings.
Questions and comments welcome.
EDIT: Link now works. Sorry for the inconvenience for anyone that may have tried it earlier. END EDIT

Nate,
try sample robot to get all your samples faster and easier.

If at first you dont suceed, then skydiving is definitively not for you.

Hey sambasevam.
Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like a pretty handy app. Doesn't run on my platform of choice though (and costs too much, IMO).

Re: Got a Yamaha DX-7. Samples Anyone?
Nandopo,
I think there's been some confusion here. These patches are for the Yamaha DX7 and TX7... and should also work with the Native Instruments FM7 softsynth. They are not Roland Fantom patches. I offered them to Nate to use with the second hand DX7 he has just bought on eBay.
