Bob Moog was a good friend of mine who I had the privilege of working with in 1969 and the early seventies and again in the mid eighties. He is a kind and gentle guy who loved to drive an old car with snails painted on it.

In 1970, I worked with Bob introducing the Mini Moog D to the world and I was flying him from Gainsville to Lake City. He kept commenting on all the stars out that night and I was busy trying to stay out of the military bombing corridor just off to our right when I casually said... "I wonder which airport it is..." suddenly he stopped looking up and began nerviously looking around for an airport beacon white - green. We landed in Lake City and he seemed to be relieved to be on the ground.

Throughout the years I kept track of him as he moved through Moog Music, Kurzweil and then when he moved to Ashville. He called a few months ago asking about a spectrum analyzer... we chatted briefly about life in general and the universe at large and only learned today that my good friend passed on to a better life.

The synthesizer evolved from products created at Bell Labs in an effort to enhance long distance voice transmission. Bob began making some interesting filter toys and along with other names at the time... developed the synthesizer. His central contribution other than designing some magical VCFs was his clever way of packaging electronics and was the first to manufacture a product (the mini) that eliminated the aweful patch cords of the modular synths.

He is an icon of the modern age who will always be remembered for his work... I will remember him for the wonderful person he was.

After seeing the news, I'm having a hard time concentrating here at work. I wish his family the best and Dr. Moog will always have a special place in my heart.

William, thanks for sharing the personal moments you have spent with him.

Thread moved to "Free zone."

William: Thanks for sharing the personal insight on Dr. Moog. It really does make him more familiar for those of us who never had the pleasure of meeting him.

this might not have as big of an impact on others as it does on me, but Dwayne from Skinny Puppy died ten years ago today. as much as bob was an influence to synths, thats how much Dwayne was an influence to me making music. kinda a sad day all around.
damn.

Has anybody heard "The Cheshire Cat Walk" played by Maynard Ferguson (Trumpet) and Chick Corea (MiniMoog)? It is an amazing composition pitting Screaming high Trumpet against growling sweet Moog. It is on the "Primal Scream" album of Maynard Ferguson. Of course, Chick Corea with "Return to Forever" used Moogs beautifully as well.

To this day, the moog patches are my favorite for leads, as on the SRX-07 for example...
313 MG Lead SRX and 299 Shmoog SRX. Very expressive and smooth....
