I miss Korg's strings. Can something be done with the Xa ?
Hey
I previously had a Korg 01 now I own a Fantom Xa. However, I still miss the typical Korgs powerful, dramatic and bombastic strings. Is ther anything that can be done with the Xa to imitate those strings ?
Thanks
Javier

Performances will offer the possibility. It enables you to have multiple layers in a patch... but you have to make them. There may be some good libraries somewhere that include some good string performances. When I used to install large stereo systems in Churches, the O1W pro88 was my choice. Through a good sound system, the Korg AnaStrings are second to none for realism and beauty... but difficult to manage dynamically as you know.
I think you may get better sounds from the XA but you'll have to work at it or buy some patches from somewhere. The strings in the Fantom are okay and mostly from old sound sets. At least they don't have the shivers like the Motif strings do. Of course, mediocre strings encourages buying those SRX cards. I found the cards for the XV5080 were not as good as the old Roland module they made a decade ago, the MOC-1. The Fantom strings are mostly from that era. The EQ'ing is bit strange and again, dynamics control isn't great but that's true of most patches on synths.
Let me know if you find something that answers your cravings for Korg strings... although beware of fancy sounding demos.

Javier,
Here's a link to a sound developer on eBay who has an orchestral collection of sounds sampled from the Triton Extreme (choose between 2 formats, Soundfont or Gigasampler):
http://stores.ebay.com/SoundBrewer_W0QQ ... viewQQtZkm
"Are you looking for high quality SoundFonts or Gigastudio banks? Do you want something as high quality as a Triton, but don't have $3000? Well here is a collection of sounds recorded directly from a Triton . A CD full of the best Orchestral sounds from the Triton Extreme. The sounds are:
Bach Ensemble (34.2mb)
Bassoon & Oboe (30.4mb)
Bells (17.8mb)
Brass Two Octave (27.3mb)
Clarinet Ensemble (32.4mb)
Double Concerto (15.2mb)
Double Winds (30.3mb)
Dragon Orchestra (17.9mb)
Dramatic Orchestra Cue (14.4mb)
English Horns & Bows (31.5mb)
Epic Orchestra (27.5mb)
Film Mix (34.2mb)
Film Sound Track (16.1mb)
Film Tools (33.7mb)
Flute Pizz Bell (17.3mb)
French Horn Ensemble (17.5mb)
Full mf Brass (17.5mb)
Gotham Sound Track (32.9mb)
Large Brass (15.7mb)
Reed Ensemble (31.2mb)
Trem Arco Violins (34.5mb)
Trumpets and Trombones (17.7)
Doublereeds (35mb)
String Section (20.5mb)
Winds Section (19.7mb)
Violins Viola Cello Octaves (28.9)
These sounds were all professionally recorded at 24 bits and mixed down to 16 bit files. All of the file sizes are listed to show the high quality that you will receive with these sounds. These SoundFonts and GigaStudio banks are all multi-sampled to create the most realistic sounding recreation of the Triton that you can find. Nothing was compromised in order to represent the instrument with all its complex texture."
At 19.99 it doesn't look like too bad of a deal!
Take care,
Michael

Re: I miss Korg's strings. Can something be done with the Xa
Ocomain... no offense intended here and I understand the enthusiasm for sounds but scarfing Triton sounds and SELLING them is kind of a weasley thing to do. And look at the setup:
First, 24bit to 16... that's a joke because the Triton claims to be only 16 bit to begin with. Plus, dithering 24 to 16 bits is an ugly thing to do since the sound is never quite the same.
But perhaps most amusing is the amount of memory designated. 32 megs is a little over three minutes of stereo recording assuming Korg actually did stereo sampling. So that means about 2.99 minutes is a wasted recording of the looped portion of the sample with all the LFO,s chorusing, reverb and other effects that trash up the sound.
Of course the final point is this: are these sounds of such quality that they're worth spending anything for them especially when someone pirated someone else's work and then charges you for it? A quick listen to the demo should answer that question.

Re: I miss Korg's strings. Can something be done with the Xa
Hi there.. ya know I just might be the person to talk to... Just for reference, I have an 2 different 01/W series synths with all the pcms, a loaded Triton Studio V2, and the XR 2.1...
bad news is, none of those are gonna come close to the strings you can get from the 01/W... it really is a string/pad monster like few others... your best bet IMO would be to get a used 01R or something. I have the EXB 02 and 06 in my Triton Studio, Symphonic Strings SRX in my XR.... while these may come along in realism in some ways... that's not where the beauty of the 01/W strings come from...
The 01/W just rules here... I've been saying it for a while.... and the stock analog string patch while great doesn't even come close when you tweak a few of your own...
the 01/W is killer....

Try Expansion series SRX-06 Clasical- much better strings than any synth in market. You must use the old programs (for JV series programmed by eric persing) They are included on cd rom. for my Taste the new programs included at SRX factory are not so good than old patches.
I have used for years and forgive, but there are no comparasion between thes set of sounds and any other company, including any korg synth. I even own 01, triton, and many roland to make real A/B tests. the real winner are always the JV clasical expansion.

Mr.William Coakley,
The seller may have used 24-bit recording to record 16-bit output, no? I'm really asking.
If thats the case, 24-bit would be better than recording 16-bit, right?
I've seen CDs like this sell on e-bay and craigslist. One guy was selling the entire Motif soundset on CDs for 35 bucks. only problem being you'll have to map the sounds yourselves.
---------------------------------------------------------------
If at first you dont suceed, then skydiving is definitively not for you.

Recording a 16 bit analog output in 24 bit is commendable... no argument there.
But dithering 24 down to 16 bit after that... reduces the program material to less than it would have been if it had been recorded at 16 bit to begin with. Evidently, they were unaware of that. Korg sounds aren't as horrible as that demo portrays. It sounds like they used a windows media recorder to sample. Anywaze, most re-fabrications from samples scarffed out of synths are significantly compromised especially if the patch is layered. Another consideration is why didn't they sample from the digital out?
Plus, I have to say, I think it's one thing to grab a sample from a friends synth and use it in your studio... but it's quite another thing to take a manufacturere's sound set and SELL it... especially when they do it so much injustice by not knowing what they're doing.
