Fantom X spotted on Live 8!

Post by pwroberts »

Mariah Carey's keyboard player is using an X7 atop something else I can't make out. First time I've seen one in use by a "big" act...

She's got an X6 behind her too.

Madonna also had an X7.

Probably missed a few more, I'm not really watching it, it's just on. Plenty of Korgs and some Yamahas and Nords on show.

And people say that pros have stopped using Roland gear. Or maybe that was just the Motif fans on Harmony Central :-)

thats b*llsh*t more and more people are using the Fantoms as I can see.

Actually I've seen the Fantom the most (Fantoms were more than the motifs I think, for examples - if you look for the same model..)

Bon Jovi's band were using Rolands and a Fantom X7...
There was also another one, I can't remember..

Anyway, talking about Live 8, am I the only one who is absolutely thrilled about the Pink Floyd show?!?! Wow that was quite exciting and pulsating (is this the word? oh well)..

Overall, 't was a realy nice "shows day", I had fun watching all the shows:P
I don't really listen to every singer that was there, but still, it was really nice.

It probably depends on the performances that everyone seen, but personnally, it's the Motif that I saw the most. More than the Triton, that was the profesionnal gigging tool in the last years. I agree that it was the first time I saw that much roland gears onstage.

Kakaroto: weird that you saw Bon Jovi using a FX: their keyboardist was using a Motif (ES probably), and is endorsed by Yamaha since long ago. I saw that they also had a "back-up" keyboardist on the other side of the drum , which used a Triton Classic. Didn't see any FX.

At last, I'm part of the gang !

If I remember right, and I think (hope) I do, hehe, Bon Jovi's main keyboardist had a Fantom at the top of his Motif... Maybe I mix him with someone else, donno...

Maybe there will be a repeat broadcast on TV or something so I'll check it out again..

Anyway, yeah, there were lots of Rolands there, more than usual!
Is that right that Roland won't pay for anyone to use its gear, or was someone saying that just for fun? lol

Well, people see someone like Stevie Wonder on a Motif, and they're like "Man! Stevie Wonder plays one of those- I want one!"

Things like an colorful, easy-to-use interface probably matter a little less to him, if you know what I mean. ;)

Seriously, I saw more Motifs than anything else there. The Motif is what is "hot". Most of the people I know that own one haven't tapped 1/5 of its potential, mainly because of the most user-unfriendly interface seen in years on a workstation.

I don't know if you've heard of them internationally, but the Australian band, The Whitlams use a Motif 8. Though the Fantom does seem to be sighted a lot on TV (at least here). Remember this thread?

"The Whitlams use a Motif 8"

Seeing (and hearing) Tim Freedman playing a Motif at many gigs almost made me choose the Motif. Seeing as I play 50% of Whitlams all the time, it would have been the obvious choice for me. But features and user friendly interface prevailed. Thats why i got so used to the way motif sounds, but overall im happy with my choice.

Glad someone else here has herd of 'The Whitlams' ;)

Who plays what

Post by mickphilipps »

I look in every Musicpaper and on TV who is what playing since the 70`s, when I started myself making Music. Yes it is interesting but not so much you think all. The importend Thing is what these prof. Players do with their Keyboards, how the play and how they use the Sounds in what kind. If someone start with Yamaha keys, its to me logical he know the System good and use the future Keys so one. And who start with Roland, he does the same.
I use Roland Keys the last 10 Years not, BUT when I read the first Information about the Fantom X, i think this is the Thing what all can do what I want to do. And the warm analog Sound do the Rest. I also tested the Motif ES, but the little Display and some other Things are not convenience to me.
I think these keyboarders you seen on the Live8 use 50 to 50 Percent Motif and Fantom. Who has anough Money use booth, why not? Next Quater Year you will seen most prof Players use the brandnew Korg Oasys.
BUT, there is every time the big important Difference: Who plays these Keys!!
