You have answered your own question with the trick answer. Because like I said, at this point in time (with this piece of technology);
There's just no way the PC Card slot can access large .wav files instantly, not with the Fantoms loading speeds anyway
The fantom's PC Card slot can roughly load about 500k a second from a CF Card. Where as RAM can access (i don't know the specs) instantly. But like I said before, loading into the RAM is not a big deal. It may take a couple of minutes but your making it out to be a huge inconvenience?
I don't know about other equipment, but talking computers in general, everything needs RAM when dealing with large files that need to be accessed quickly, so i'm not sure a workstation exists out there that can load directly off an external storage device.
It's not a trick its a requirement of the hardware, there is no way around it...ie. there will never be a software update that says 'you can now sample directly off your cards'.
Hope this helps your understanding of the requirements or restrictions if you will of the hardware capabilities on the Fantom.

you can do stuff like that without the upgrade too, only thing, because of midi triggering, the note will have to be present when the sequencer is playing....a big PITA.
you can do this instead, chop the samples into bits while sampling itself and then STEP RECORD and layout the notes which play the samples. this ensures that even it plays the next sample incase it missed the previous one....this is the only solution i can think of...
hope that helps....

If at first you dont suceed, then skydiving is definitively not for you.

oh, instead of chopping it when it samples, chop it AFTER it samples, cos, we dont know what 1 measure is when sampling....

That's it. I am considering WHY to buy that UP-1 kit? Roland promises something like 8-track multitrack, but if it is still need to do that "trick" - do a "multitrack from RAM", why to by it? With enough RAM you can do it from ANY sampler, nothing special !!!
The speed would not be a problem, 8x2 mutitrack would need 1.3 MB /sec (with no compression WAV) ... top CF cards do 10 MB/sec, regular 4 MB/sec. Reading directly form media? Regular mutitracks do it, even from old, slow SM cards !!! Why not Fantom ?

In other words, you are asking for Direct from Disk streaming??
thats the ultimate thing to do with the Fantom. would save a lot of PITA if they did that, but, 99.999% i know its impossible.
perhaps, in the next fantom.....

Were still not quite there...
CF cards do 10 MB/sec, regular 4 MB/sec
Yes, the cards can do this, however the Fantoms hardware is limited to 500k/sec, meaning you can spend top dollar and get a 10mb/sec card, but it's only going to read it at 500k. This is it's hardware limitations.
Simple answer = It can't be done.

God damm it! I am asking myself why Roland needs to lay us about "multitrack" feature ? Yes, of course, they DID NOT lie, they just telling things ... a different way. EUR 80 for UP-1 is not a big money, but for what? OS update ... usually it's free. EUR 80 for PC card adapter + 128MB CF card? Pretty expensive. I am GRRRRR angry rather I get OS update files illegaly - download. The easyiest thing in the world.
Also I dont think 500kB/sec limit schould be a problem. As well as "Direct Disk Streaming" - c'mon, it's just a sound file playback! I am sure several hardware multitracks with old slow SM cards inside do it, so why not Fantom?
