Too Many Sounds in the Fantom X!
I think I will never really practice or write a song again! I say this based on how many hours I spend scrolling through patches and programming new patches. I enjoy just playing with the the Fantom X so much that I wonder if I will ever increase my piano and song writing skills....Anyone else have this problem?

Funny it's the first time I ever see someone complaining about this but yes it actually happend to me too. Sometimes you're scrolling and searching for a specific sound and then you stop just for enjoying other one.

Maybe Roland could program in a "practice mode". For one hour you could only choose 1 Piano, 1 Electric Piano and 1 Organ. Then, maybe I would practice...

I stay in Piano Mode when I am practicing. It allows me to switch only between piano sounds without getting distracting. Otherwise I can go off on tangents for hours.

maybe the best approach is.. decide what type of music sound you want to produce.
then concentrate on putting together a performace setting of that type.
then you can either compile a few presets to create your performace setting or concentrate on building your sound for that performance.
You can afford to go off in tangents here because your now concentrating on your setup.
when you have finaly finished (25hrs later!)
Save your perfomance setting.
Next time you come to the FX to make music you wont have to go searching for that elusive sound.

There is no such thing as "too many" sounds...
It's always not enough...
If you feel like it's "too many", try to add four more expansion boards to your Fantom...

I have to admit, I have enjoyed the performance mode. I have used the text info to list the song names that correspond to the F keys. I have made one perfomance of 8 patches just for Here Comes The Sun...Very fun. I think I will do what QuinnX said and just plug along on the Performance path...When I go there, I can see song names and be promted to practice those songs...
I have heard that scheduling gigs is a good motivator to practice as well...

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I just needed a little nudge to start practicing again...I just started learning "Baby I love your way" Peter Frampton....The preset 028 Stage Phaser works great...

lol I don't practice on my Fantom...i run over to the practice rooms here @ school and sit down to an acoustic piano...quiet room = much focus

I made it a habit not to call up any other patches till I have completed my daily practice run, otherwise I'd get lost like MadaHorn. I have set up my Fantom to automatically open up with Ultimate Piano

haha.....that's a wonderful problem to have.
You can also search sounds in categories too....like all the pianos, all the organs, all the brass, etc....it's sweet. That way, if you're looking for a certain type of instrument, you can cycle through all your options for that instrument.
One thing I've observed is that the way the sound comes across to me totally depends on my mood and what I'm doing at the present time. I've skipped over sounds while working on songs thinking they sound lame, but then I've done new projects where I've built the beat around the same sound because I think it's sweet at that moment.
I'm the type of guy that can never have enough sounds to play with. That was a big worry to me before I bought my roland. I was scared I'd invest all this money and not have all the sounds that I wanted to work with. That's so not the case, especially with the amount of creativity this synth allows.

Well, I sometimes feel that having so much sounds is a drawback. I used to tweak a lot more sounds than I do now just because the sound is "there". Sometimes we end up not knowing all the "creativity" possibilities our boards have because we do not need to dig enough - the sounds we need are allready programmed...

I agree. It's cool being that I'm using Sonar for most of my sequencing. I'm looking for a sound to fit what I'm doing, I find something totally different, won't fit in my song, but I've got an idea. In Sonar, I can open another project, and jot the idea down really quick.
I originally bought my Fantom, because I wanted to get so far in a new project without having to start up my computer and Sonar. I generally don't need all 16 midi tracks in the Fantom's sequencer so I can get away with loading the instrument into my current project, solo the track and put my idea down, but it isn't easy to get it from that sequence to another.
