V10L3NT N3RD, a MIDI interface will allow you to control an attached MIDI device or record notes (and a bunch of other control stuff) from your PC. It will also allow you to record the same information from your device to your PC. A soundcard (internal or external) is purely intended to record and playback audio.
Some soundcards also have a MIDI interface built-in.... and this is the only way in which a soundcard could "double as a MIDI interface".
Hope that helps,
Dave

Re: MIDI interfaces
thanks for clearing that up dboulden. now i know what i need... an external soundcard with midi interface built in like you said.
just to clear this up for me
so would the edirol or the midisport 4X4 then plug into the soundcard's midi in and out correst...so you would need both, for example, an emu0404 card and a multi midi interface to connect 4 instruments for example? thank you
Re: MIDI interfaces
Hey, JC -
If the Fantom-X is your master controller, run a MIDI cable from the MIDI OUT of the Fantom-X to the MIDI IN of your V-Synth. If you only want to hear the Fantom-X, a quick solution would be to turn the volume down on the V-Synth when playing the Fantom-X. Or play only the V-Synth keyboard when you only want to hear it. As a more permanent solution, if you only want to hear the V-Synth alone when playing from the Fantom-X, go into the Fantom-X System, scroll down to Sound and turn Local "off". Then you'll only hear the V-Synth.
Hope this helps.

First of all, Edirol makes quite a few different things. So, if you want a sensible answer, you are going to have to be more specific. As far as I know, none of Edirol's current MIDI interfaces plug into a soundcard.
Secondly, the MidiSport 4x4 is a USB-to-MIDI interface, so it doesn't plug into any soundcard either.
You do not NEED a distinct MIDI IN/OUT for every added instrument or device. It's quite easy to simply chain devices IN-to-THRU-to-IN-to-THRU, etc. off of a single interface, such as the MIDI interface provided by the Emu 404.
In most case this will work just spiffy, unless you get easily confused by simple things like assigning MIDI channels or if you really need to have 16 MIDI channels available on each and every device (which is EXTREMELY unlikely)
Last I heard you had paired down your setup to a Motif ES + a DR-series drum machine. If that's the case, than all of this information is of no use to you. The Motif ES already has a very good USB-to-MIDI interface built in. You can just chain the drum machine off of your Motif ES and you should be golden.
Stop trying to make things harder than they are, Sam. LEARN WHAT YOU HAVE first, before confusing yourself with all sorts of stuff you don't need.

Re: MIDI interfaces
mmm... sure its not a "stink piano sounds Fantom X" with a MOTIF label stamped in it?...
...just could not afford the 8!
...just could not afford the 8!
hey dansgold you are close but not
i still have the P200, the Motid ES Rack, the DR880, an XV2020 and the Fantom X8 until the check clears from EBay...I bought the em0404 just as a better soundcard when I want to do things away from Pro Tools which works fine on my system...I like to use comping software for songwriting and it is easier thru midi without the M Box involved...to complete my home studio I still need a hardware type sequencer so I am thinking of getting the triton extreme with some of the fantom dough..this way I can dump rythym tracks into the BR1600 for quick inspirational songtools and ideas..so in conclusion i will have korg, yamaha and roland sounds...for a little more than the price of the fantom X8...what is wrong with that? i just have to figure out how to set it all up...i think seperate ins and outs for each to midi is cleaner???
Re: MIDI interfaces
There's nothing wrong with your choice of equipment, Sam ... that's not even close to the point.
What's going to continue to cause you frustration is that you are constantly biting off more than you can chew, trying to run before you know how to crawl, and then pretending as though the fault lies somewhere else when you get confused or can't accomplish what you want.
What you really need to do is learn little bits of the equation at a time. Try actually digging into MIDI and learning how it operates. You'll be surprised how many things will become crystal clear to you if you just purpose to wrap your head around them.
If that's a bit daunting, try learning the ropes of that BR1600CD. It's a beautiful little deck, and you'd do well do actually understand how it operates.
You can't understand the puzzle if you don't know the pieces.

"...bought the em0404 just as a better soundcard... "
"...it is easier thru midi without the M Box involved..."
"...I like to use comping software for songwriting..."
"...I still need a hardware type sequence..."
"..I can dump rythym tracks into the BR1600 for quick inspirational songtools and ideas..."
confused ???
