The ultimate B3 sound search continues...

Post by Ben »

Ok, so I'm still trying to get the best B3 sound ever on my fantom X7 (but am too broke to buy the SRX card :) ). The question: I have a nice B3 emulator program on my mac and I am unsure of what I neet to create a multisample of the sounds on this emulator.

The mac is one of the older, original shape imac. I have a feeling that I may need some king of adaptor to get the sounds from the mac into the X7, but I understand the whole sampling procedure. If somebody could explain or point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

I will most certainly share the finished patch!

Thanks

I sampled the Native Instruments B4 organ for my Fantom, as a multisample...the organ itself is great, but the leslie FX on the board just isn't realistic enough, and I'm also having trouble getting strong lows from the sound...but creating a multisample (I use an FS) was a pretty decent way to go.

I've got the demo version of the Native Instruments B4 and that's what I want to sample, I'm just not sure of how to connect my mac to the fantom to actually sample the sound. Do I need a midi interface or some other external device?

just go to the hollow sun site and the b3 is already sampled at all the right places

nothing is perfect except the original but this one sounds pretty decent... plus you can add other organs by assigning the their volume on the assignable knobs... it works for everything i do.. and when it comes down to it if you gotta have perfection buy a b3 :)

looking for cheap sound modules/analog synths

Thanks jc,

I have already created a hollow sun multisample but there is a certain setting on the Native Instruments B4 that I just love and is more suited to the reggae music I'm playing. I just need to know how to route the sound from the mac into the X7 or how to save certain notes from the Native Instruments B4 as .wav to import into the X7.

Cheers

1/8" Audio Out on the iMac -> 1/8" to 1/4" adapter -> 1/4" audio cable to the Audio Input on the Fantom. No MIDI required.

One thing per the Leslie sound once you've got a B3 you like: The standard Rotary MFX isn't even close to a real Leslie sound. However, the VK Rotary MFX is the same one used in Roland's VK-77 and VK-8 organs as their "Leslie" simulator which is a top contender for best sim effect among organists. So with the right settings - Suitcase B3 on the SRX-07 card has it nailed - the VK Rotary effect is the way to go. I think there's only 7 or 8 organ patches that already use it = duh? Some organ patches can easily be changed to the VK Rotary like they were made for it, maybe need a little tweaking. Others won't work, but some "B3-ish" patches with the standard Rotary effect can be "rehabilitated" by using close to the same settings as the VK Rotary per rise and fall times and general speeds, etc. Get into the control screen to set foot control on the Hold pedal to trigger Fast/Slow if you want. I can't remember the exact details as I've been working on another keyboard, but following the Suitcase B3 example should get you there.

Just curious,

A little question for Hammond organ freaks, those versed in both the real deal and sampled ones.

How good are the waveforms on both the SRX-7 and the Fantom X ?

I would love to hear any opinions on this. As well as how good the feel on the Fantoms are for playing organ-style parts compared to an organ with the round-edged keys.

bigdav149, sorry can't help you there as i am new to that also. Post a thread in either the newbies or sampling sections and i'm sure you will get some very good responses.

That Suitcase B3 patch of SRX7 is interesting in programming. It doesn't even use any B3 samples. It is pure product of synth engine based on suitcase EP wave forms. Many EP wave forms can give organ sounds.

I've played Hammonds a lot...B3,C3, L100...The only way you're going to get close is with SRX-07. The stock waveforms are crap from my standpoint...the percussion doesn't sit right, there's not enough selection to get the registrations I want, there's no samples with the Leslie cranked...

SRX-07 is a different story. It's like Roland expects you to pick up this board if you want good B3/Leslie sounds. I like the waves that are the whole package...the B3 and Leslie are sampled as a unit. This is a different approach than Yamaha and Korg, but to me it yields the best, most playable fake Hammond/Leslie sounds.

I've come up with some screaming leads running overdrive into rotary, but there are no patches like this because to do this you have to set up two MFX's in series in a performance. You have to roll your own. For some reason, my Fantom S won't run the amp sim and rotary together...DSP overload? Or maybe it's something that's fixed in that OS update I've been putting off.

Just discovered this thread ... and I have a few thoughts.

First, yes the SRX07 is your best bet if you want to do B3/C3 sounds on your Fantom. It's not going to be as good as NI's B4 VST, Roland VK or a Korg CX3, but it'll do nicely.

My two biggest problems with using the Fantom as a B3 are:
a) The lack of a good way to do Fast/Slow/Brake controls for the rotary effects. I'm using a combination of a control knob, the D-beam and the mod lever right now ... it works, but it's terribly awkward.
b) No good way to do live swells and registration changes, because there aren't any drawbars. You can fake this somewhat by using an expression pedal and fading between 2 patches in performance mode. It's good enough for live performance, but not for any serious recording, IMHO.

I've been experimenting a little with using a 3-patch performance. Each patch represents some aspect of a tonewheel organ's sound. The first patch has its 4 tones tuned to the 16', 5 1/3', 8' and 4' footages. The second patch has 4 tones at 2 2/3', 2', 1 3/5' and 1 1/3' footages. The 3rd tone cover the 1' range as well as key click and percussion.

This way I can at least try to approximate "real" registrations from various fake books, etc. It's just an experiment right now but it's yielding pretty good results.

UPDATE:

The V2 software allows you to assign MODULATION to the switches ... so switch #2 is my "slow/fast" control now.

This works very well. It's nice to be able to use either a switch or the mod lever to control the rotary effect.
