Ok, I'm a newbie. I'll admit, but how else do you learn, but to ask questions? I love Roland, if you haven't guessed, however I'm looking to buy a new board. After reading and talking with folks, I've decided to buy the Fantom XR instead of the X8, just because I already have two keyboards. The question is this. I have never worked with a sampler before and with the expansion capabilities of the XR, I'm hoping someone can give me some pointers on what using sampling can do. I'm interested in buying/finding/downloading PADs and strings sounds. I'm particularly found of the Korg Triton sounds. Question 1) Does anybody know where I can get these. 2) How easy is it to get these into the XR? Do you have to convert them, configure them. I assume they are WAV forms of some sort. 3) What is the media to buy to store all the sounds, once I get them? I'll probably just buy the whole thing up to 1 Gig.
No, I haven't bought the XR yet, but will purchase 1 in a week or so. Also, whats the best price? I've seen them on eBay for around $1100 or internet prices range between $1100 to $1395.
My email is civerson@kc.rr.com. If I could get someone to help me, I'd be willing to share any/all the sounds/wavs I buy/download etc.
TO XR or Not to XR
Re: TO XR or Not to XR
hi there,
Sampling is easier if you buy new FXR now since Roland will give out sample importing tools software and stuff free. FXR accepts .WAV or AIFF files.
You will need to expand RAM to Max(with PC133 512Mb RAM) and you will need PC card adaptor(the machine has PC card slot) and compact flash card(other storage media cards work also) or micro drive of at least 512Mb or more.
Where to buy? That is a good question. There are many web sites that sells samples. Just look out for them.
Sampling can import any sound you like into the machine and you can edit and use them as internal sound or you can mix them with internal sound and create newer one.

Re: TO XR or Not to XR
Don't pay more than $1100. Get quotes from well-known internet retailers. Then show them to your local store. They will most likely match.
I wouldn't count too much on using the XR as a full-blown sampler, unless you shuttle sounds back and forth between it and the computer. The display is small and you have to do alot of scrolling. Not that it can't be done. Just don't expect it to be fast or nearly as easy as if you had one of the Fantoms with the nice display. I view my XR mainly as a great set of rom samples, patches, and the ability to expand by 6 SRX boards. A great axe if you already have a keyboard and you like the sounds.

I have one still in the Box .
I have the Fantom-X6 so I don't want to keep the XR.

Internet Pricing
2Tim - Where are you finding this priced at $1100 dollars. The only prices I have seen around that are Ebay prices, and those are very few. Do you have any website places or URLs handy where I can find a good price. Most places are selling at average retail $1349.

PC133 512Mb
DKPcola - when you say a PC133 512Mb Ram are you talking about SD RAM like you put into a computer? Something like this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 44916&rd=1
Also, what is this adapter I will need? Do you have part number where I can price around for it?

Roland Mon!
You should use PC100 or PC133 RAM DIMMS of the following spec:
Package: 168-pin DIMM
Feature: SDRAM, PC100 or PC133
DIMM Type: Unbuffered
Error Checking: Non-parity or Non-ECC
Speed: 100 or 133MHz
Voltage: 3.3V
The one you listed should be fine, but also check:
