Got my SRX11 Yesterday...

Post by Joey »

Hey folks,
at first I was a little bit dissapointed, because the sound doesn´t seem to be valued nearly 300,- €... But after playing a while I`ve to say that the board sound are really, really nice and better than the sounds from SRX02!

My favorite is no. 002 "Wide Stereo Grand" and for solo piano playing no. 003 "Classic Grand". I like the board because the sounds are more brilliant than the internal FX piano. I´ll check the board at some weekend gigs hoping that the sounds are going trough band arrangement also (good for band playing is no. 010 "Bright Pop")...

Kind regards.
Joey

My Friend Dean told me that the SRX !! and Fantom Piano were very comparable, and that the new one has some more low end but im goingto A/B it this weekend i will let you know of results.

Definitely interested in A/B/Cing

A) SRX-11 pianos

B) Fantom-X "Ultimate Grand" (The 4-strike piano sample)

C) Fantom-X/S/Xa "So True" or "Concert Grand" (the samples from the original Fantom-S wave ROM)

Please let us know what you think. Thanks!

BTW I heard the RD-700SX, which I think has the SRX-11 piano, and I thought the other piano (from the Fantom-X "Ultimate Grand") sounded better. Same opinion in re-listening to the SRX-11 demos on MP3.

2TIM316,
I´ve checked the SRX11 at two live gigs and also the FX- and SRX02 Pianos. ... and here are the results ...

A) SRX-11 pianos
I think the pianos are very good for solo playing, in band I´ve had a few problems with the sound. But I think that these problems could be solved, when I edit the preset sounds of the board.
9 from 10 points

B) Fantom-X "Ultimate Grand" (The 4-strike piano sample)
For solo playing the piano is ok, forget it in complex live band arragements...
7 from 10 points

C) Fantom-X/S/Xa "So True" or "Concert Grand" (the samples from the original Fantom-S wave ROM)
I don´t use this sounds at the moment.

D) Pianos from SRX02
For band arrangements these sounds are (edited) very good, better than the original FX Piano.
8 from 10 points

Kind regards.

How did you "test" the different piano sounds? PLaying a piano sequence live and listen to amplified PA sound? What PA did you use? I'm interested because mixing piano sounds live isn't an easy job.

i have no problems with ANY of my piano sounds cutting thru on stage at all, the SRX-02 is good and the Ultimate Grand patch is even better, people have commented on it sounding fantastic, i now cant wait to get the SRX-11..i just know its going to be the best ever...

Its gonna depend on what you amplify the Fantom thru anyway, if you do it in MONO it sucks big time!
if you use STEREO onstage its awesome. i use a pair of EV Powered cabs, for years i had run my keys in Mono, and i would never go back to that EVER..
i would even go so far as to say its made me a better player, i can put more emotion and expression into my playing as i can hear how each of my 2 keyboards should sound, i have both the FANTOM X8 and the MOTIF ES7 and im well pleased :-)

I love the "So True" and "Concert Grand" patches. I do tweek them a little with velociy curves to make them more expressive. These are very pure sounding to me and inspire me to be more musically expressive. I can imagine the "Ultimate Grand" working well live, but I do not prefer the overall timber of it. It has a "Raw" sound to it. That is cool, but I prefer a "Pure" sound for most of my tunes. The "Raw" sound has obviously worked well for many...John Lennon, etc. The "Pure" sound that I mention is like Norah Jones. I can get the "So True" to sound alot like Norah! Yummy!

"Raw" - Wide - Lively - Brilliant
"Pure" - Round - Focused - Cutting

tcplugin, I´ve made two things to check the piano sounds. First I´ve checked them with my stereo in-ear-monitoring on stage together with the other instruments and the vocals (Sennheiser EW 300 with Shure E5). After the gig I´ve checked my live recording with MD. Of course these things are my personal opinion...

Kind regards.

Wow!!! I LOVE most of the piano patches on the SRX-11 and find them to be very inspiring...the kind of stuff that makes you WANT to play!!! I'm using the Fantom-S 61, so my only frame of reference are the stock presets, combined with several other Roland patches downloaded from this site. I find the samples to have a lot of definition and clarity, combined with some good programming. My very favorites are:

Superb Grand
Wide Stereo Grand
Warm Room
Mixed Layer
First Star
New Age Layer
Mc Reverse
Meditate
Penta Duo
Barococo
Pianolins

There are only a handful of "why did they bother" patches, and even these may prove useful with some editing or combining with other onboard patches or different fx routings. I'm extremely happy that I spent my money on this particular expansion! This is my 3rd one (along with World & Orchestral) and they all have been indispensable. Great Stuff Indeed!!!

Great advice about the SRX11, this is one that i am currently considering buying, because all my Piano sounds are XV ones and their nothing to write home about. One question i had was how many patches and waveforms are contained on this board ?.

There are 40 waveforms and 42 patches for the Fantom series (only 30 patches for any of the other instruments that use SRX cards).

What a drag. I typed a whole reply and then the system wouldn't take it. Okay I'll try again.

I realize stereo is far better, but for practical reasons some of us still do gigs with just one amp in mono. So I need to find out how the SRX-11 sounds in mono.

For comparison, I found the "Ultimate Grand" and its derivatives were completely unusable in mono, due to phase cancellation. Thus I am using "So True" and its derivatives from the original Fantom-S bank.

I hope someone would be willing to test SRX-11 in mono. BTW I believe that both SRX-11 and SRX-02 have at least one patch designed to be played in mono.

Awaiting the report - thanks!

SRX-11 - compatible with FANTOM-S?

Post by JAIR »

Hi Michael, does the SRX-11 runs well with the Fantom-S? I doubt it, cause in rolandus.com they say that it only works with Fantom-X
