It would allow me to add a live recording of my guitar playing down with a sequence. So let's say I'm putting together a song, and I want to loop the chorus, to work on the drums. With your FantomX before the upgrade, you wouldn't here the guitar part, because the note that is sequenced to trigger the guitar part would have been around bar one, which the sequencer doesn't see, if we start playback at the chorus.

Can you use the 8 track audio together with 16 tracks midi?

Or does one audio track mean one or two less miditracks?

I consider the additional 8 tracks as the equivalent of having an 8 track hard disk recorder or DAW. Look at it has having a totally separate piece of gear at your fingertips that allows you to record any instrument live into the Fantom direct to a track, not just as a sample. As someone stated in another thread, it's like in-track-sampling on steroids.

This puts the Fantom X in an elite class for its price range.

Imagine taking a BOSS BR-1600 and sticking it onto the Fantom-X.

You now have 16 midi channels and 8 stereo audio channels. You can sing, play your guitar, or yoddle into a microphone hooked up to the line ins and it will all play back in sync with your MIDI tracks.

You can have 8 different tracks of stereo audio. One of the main gripes with the Fantom-X is the lack of insert FX. Well now you can record a MIDI track with an insert effect to one of the audio tracks. This frees up an insert for something else. If you use up all of the audio tracks you can bounce them to another track and have 7 more stereo tracks to play with.

Basically now the Fantom-X is the keyboard version of the MV-8000. There are subtle differences, but they are very similar now...

If I were to sample myself singing into the Fantom-X, for 3 minutes, singing the verse, chorus, etc... straight through, for say three minutes. After I've made the sample, I can play the song back, and we won't here me singing.
I'd have to load the sample into an instrument, then trigger it with a note on from whichever key or pad that I assign the sample to. So let's say i want my vocal performance to start at bar one, beat one. I play the song, and hit the appropriate key/pad at bar one, beat one, and now we can hear me singing.
Now my wife comes in and starts asking me about something(I don't know what, I wasn't really paying attention). anyway, I stop playback, and fake making eye contact. She leaves the room, I go back to hit play, and I hear everything but my singing. This is because the sample isn't playing, as the sequencer didn't pass bar 1 beat 1, so it never told the Fantom to play the sample.
Now with an audio track, you are not telling the fantom when to play the sample, it is always on. I can start and stop from anywhere. If I get to the chorus, and realize I emphasized the wrong word when the crash hits, I can take it out, and overdub the right word, at the right time. without having to go into sample edit, I could just hit record, and record over the wrong part.

JiP & Incogneeto,

I never really payed much attention to sampling feature of my x until tonight, in part due to this new feature that roland is adding. I ran my studio projects tb1 mic -->m-audio tampa pre -->fanx digital in and recorded some short vocal clips. Imho, it sounded pretty good!!! If you guys do not have stand alone recorders this new upgrade is something that you might want to consider. Not to sound redundant (posted in another thread) but as far as cost $49.00 or $150.00 for a 8 track recorder with nice sound quality. I think that it will be worth it. Ok thats my .02!!! And no, I do not work for roland ;)

I guess this upgrade is something else than I expected. I expected something like:

You have 8 tracks of song in WAV files
You upload it to Fantom - save it to CF card
Fantom plays tracks in song, reading directly from CF card (no RAM, no samplig)

But I guess this is somethong like a "sampling", but named with other words.

........4 months later :)

Yes your right, you can do ALL that. But loading it into the RAM is not a big deal. There's just no way the PC Card slot can access large .wav files instantly, not with the Fantoms loading speeds anyway. Anyway I think everyone clearly understands what V2 is offering now. Just remember all these questions were being asked when it was brand NEW (or not available for another month here in Australia).

Do you mean that I can import eg. vocal track, save it into CF card, attach it into the song and play it similar like in multritrack recorder, even with realtime timestretching?

No tricks like: yes, but it must be loaded into sampler's RAM first ?
