I don't see MIDI inputs though I guess there are. But there is no soundcard in that thing, and I quite want one..

I think it can realy serve as your soundcard and even an awesome one (if you buy a M-Audio soundcards, not all serve as one).
But For games, I think the Audigy for example will be a better choice.

M-audio concentrate on music. Thats why its best (from what I heard) for music stuff. But it doesn't care about games;P

The MIDI, audio and S/P-DIF sockets are round the back. The term "sound-card" is a bit mis-used these days... view this product as an external MIDI and audio interface. Audio and MIDI ins and outs are sampled/translated inside the box and transmitted down a firewire cable to your PC (and vice-versa). M-Audio have a pretty good reputation for solid products. This box would offer you the option of taking the output from the Fantoms's S/P-DIF output to the Audiophile's S/P-DIF in using an RCA Phono cable meaning the Fantom's output is never translated to analog, staying digital all the way into your computer's sequencer.

Yes it serves as your sound card (hardware dongle for pro tools). I don't actually know anyone with an M-Box, but my people use the Digi001, 002 and HD24 protools systems.

I would say its as good as any other sound card aimed at the semi-pro home studio.

the audigy works at 48k as far as i know

Hey E-MU makes some nice cards i own the 1212M and i have a freind who owns the 0404 both are awsome sounding cards i like the fact that the 1212M doesn't have the breakout cable though and at one point the 0404 didn't have support for 192KHz which now it does.. both have really good SNR and quality the effects are kinda bummer but just use effects outside the E-MU PatchMIX DSP well hope that helps. Oh an one other thing.. with ASIO drivers the latnecy is no more lol i have mine runnig smoothly at 4ms really powerful. Midi is midi on any card.. htere won't be any difference for that really it's mostly to do with audio in the higher end cards.. for example SB vs EMU 1212M 1/4' INs and OUTs amoung other things.. SB is a 5.1 card meant more for the everyday listener and gamer.

The audio quality difference between SB Live and other cards is not noticeable (even between SB Live and delta 66. I think it doesn't worth the 200$ difference).

MIDI as EuroFantom said is the same, even you don't need to use your sound card's midi section. You can connect your Fantom to your pc via USB. It's exactly what I'm doing, and it works fine.

The main differences are Recording resolution, Latency and connectivity. If you want to sound like a pro, you should record 24/16 (I'm not saying 24/96 because Fantom's digital out is 24/16). SB Live and Audigy 1 doesn't record 24 bit, the can only play 24 bit. But other mentioned sound cards can record even 24/96, which is more than what you need.

Your Fantom has digital I/O and it's a great advantage, so I suggest a sound card with digital connectivity ie. Audiophile 24/96, Audiophile 192, Delta 66 and E-MU 0404 (I'm not 100% sure about E-MU 0404).

The audio latency is another important factor. I know that M-Audio soundcards have a very low latency. Creative sound cards don't have a good reputation for the latency. I have no idea about E-MU but I think M-Audio has the list latency among the mentioned cards.

Now I actualy know why and if I need a new soundcard:)
So, it's mainly for recording.
But what about recording inside the Fantom? Why do I need it on the PC? Better possibilities and easy to use?

Besides, lets say I'll buy M-Audio. Can I still have SB Live in order to have batter gamming resolts? And switch between them or something? I know its strange but...

You can have 2 sound cards on one pc at the same time. But why SB Live for gaming? You want to use the environments? If so, do that, because M-Audio cards are not game oriented and don't have such things.

Using a pc for recording and squencing is much easier than using Fantom's sequencer, also the software sequencers are much more powerful.
