Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
I am new to this site, but I can see it will become very useful.
I play guitars but I got an XR for recording etc. I have 2 expansion cards (SRX7 AND SRX6) the SRX6 I bought for the Celtic type sounds however Roland UK tell me that the extra patches on the CD that come with it are only compatible with XV modules. How can I convert those patches for my XR? Does this new 'translator' I see posted do that?

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Hi joe.
If the sample CD is a Roland LCD-X type CD or a CD intended for the Roland S-760 or S-770, the Fantom Translator will convert those samples and Patches to Fantom-X samples and Patches (or Performances or Rhythm kits, depending on how the preferences in the Fantom Convertor are set).

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Hi Nathan, I do not know what type the CD is. It came in the box with the SRX6 expansion card.
The 'manual' in the box says that the SRX6 has all the waveforms of the SR-JV80-02/13/16 and some of the JV80-07 cards. But not the original patches from those SR-JV cards. It has new patches for the XR only.
The CD contains patch settings relating to the SR-JV expansion cards, but according to Roland UK they are not compatible with Fantom Xs, but they are compatible with Fantom Ss. I am a complete newbie to synths, so I do not yet know how to build patches up from waveforms. I was hoping this new 'chicken' thing was the translator to do it. Is that what you mean by Fantom Translator?
Thanxs for you time. Joe

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
This CD is not a sample CD; it is a CD ROM containing SR-JV data, which is not compatible with any of the Fantom’s except for the FA-76 (original Fantom) that still had the old XV architecture. Unfortunately that CD is useless to you as a newer Fantom owner.

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Not 100% compatible I would say.
FantomX library will still read the midi files from that SRX CDrom and load the patches. You may write those patches to FantomX and then go to fantomX editor to edit them.
All parameters of the original patch(of the CD rom) are still intact except EFX and Wave bank name. You need to reassign wave bank name to Expansion->SRX6 or 7 and EFX(if original EFX is something other than equalizer).

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Holy $#!+, How did you get them to load into your Fantom-X? Some have been able to get these patches into the Librarian but this is the first post I have read were someone got these patches to then load into the keyboard. Did you do anything special or just load them like you normally would by writing them to the user area?

Hold the phone! I am guessing that these are loaded the same way the m-Lo’s patches were. I’ll have to give that a try.

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Just write those patches to user area using fantomX librarian.
Of course, you have to switch on the librarian mode at the machine. Once these patches loaded into user area, run FantomXeditor and edit those patches like you want. They may not be 100% original sounded but many are quite the same as original XV sounds.

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
I just purchased a Fantom S, with 2 Expansion Cards (World & Orchestral). I wasn't too thrilled with the patches featuring Uillean (Irish) Pipes on the Orchestral Card, so loaded the included JV patches into the software Fantom Librarian. I just previewed each patch that I wanted to try (you don't even have to put the keyboard into Librarian Mode to do this), went into Edit Mode and changed the Tone locations from "Sample" to the appropriate Expansion card and Bank. So far, I am definitely pleased with about 98% of the results...in other words, it sounds pretty damn good! Next, I'm going to try this with the World card and see what happens. It's an extremely easy way to generate new sounds without even breaking a sweat!

This is great news, I'm gonna try this out with mine too, thanks for this all who left the great tips and instructions!!!! Artemio should include this in some faq, or tutorial.
Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
STILL…CAN’T…GET…IT…
Here is what I do step by step to try and load these patches from the CD ROM that comes with SRX6-9. Please read this over and tell me where I am going wrong with all of this.
1. Unzip SR-JV Data from CD ROM that came with SRX08
2. Save unzipped data to the Sng Folder of the Seq Folder of the Roland Folder of my Smart Media Card using the card reader/writer on my computer.
3. Transfer card from computer to Fantom-S
4. Hit the “Save/Load” button
5. Hit F6 “Load Song”
6. Hit F6 “Card”
7. Scroll down to one of the SR-JV80 Midi files
8. Hit F8 “Load” and then hit F8 again for Execute
9. Hit the “menu” button on the Fantom-S and scroll down to “Librarian”
10. While in Librarian mode hit “Play” on the sequencer and let it play/load the data until the sequencer stops
11. Select User area patches in hopes that these SR-JV80 patches will now be in the user area of my Fantom-S but unfortunately they are not
The above procedure worked just fine when loading the midi librarian file for m-Lo’s patches from this site.
Maybe I am going about this all wrong but I can’t figure out how to load these patches into the software librarian on my computer from the CD ROM to save my life although I do remember that Red Winger was able to at least do this much but then could not get them to load into his Fantom-S.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
OMG! I finally got it. When you insert a SMF file into the Fantom-S software librarian you have to change the mode the librarian is in and then go back to patch mode for the data to be present. Geez, how many times I have tried this and not changed the librarian mode… Very, very cool! I deeply regret ever telling anyone that the CD ROM that comes with SRX6-9 is not compatible with the Fantom-S/X. I am very sorry about this.

Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Yeehaw:D Glad you got it worked out man, I'm glad I kept those cds. Heck there's so many patches on those cds. This is cool news. This needs some coverage in a faq here at fantomized or something.... this is like a heap of new patches for our Fantoms!
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Using JV / XV patches (from CD) with Fantom XR
Thanxs everyone for the advice.
FatBoyJim, you say you got it to work using the Fantom-S software librarian, but when I phoned Roland UK they told me that the XR was a like Fantom X and as such had different 'architecture' to a Fantom S. And so it would not be able to take the SR-JV 'patches'. What's your take on that?
As a newbie I am already over my head! But if someone tells me that it'll work for Xs, I'll continue trying. At the moment I am waiting for my XR to come back after getting a new mainboard.
On another post (which I'll reply to) someone asked about serial numbers of XRs to see if there was a connection between them and the mainboard fault. Mine was bought 5 months ago, Serial: ZS114477
