JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
Hi everyone
This issue has come up on different forums at different times, and now it's affecting me.
I've got a JU-06A and a MacBook Pro running Catalina.
I've installed the driver - the "install helper" app (which is bundled with the driver) says "The driver has been successfully installed. Please connect Boutique JU-06A."
Except the Boutique *is* connected - but it's not showing at all. The MacBook is powering the JU-06A via USB, so it's definitely connected properly. I get sound out of the built-in speaker purely from the MacBook's USB power.
Roland's website says I should go into the "Audio Midi Setup" app. It says the JU-06A should show there. It also says I need to select the JU-06A as a sound input/output source in System Preferences.
But the JU-06A is not visible in either Audio Midi Setup or System Preferences > Sound.
And Roland being Roland, there's nothing in the setup or help files that gives any information at all about how to troubleshoot the problem.
I've tried several different USB cables but the JU-06A still doesn't appear.
The other common solution - to allow the driver to load by giving it permission in System Preferences > Security > General - isn't an issue: the driver loads successfully.
I've successfully installed 2xJP-08, an SE-02 and a TR-09 on this same MacBook Pro. I'm happily using them all with my DAW.
I have no idea why the JU-06A won't work. And it's doing my head in, cos it's my favourite of all the "classic" Boutique synths (I think the SE-02 is my favourite of all).
Does anyone have any advice or troubleshooting steps they can give me? I'd be so grateful. Hopefully the problem is just that I forgot to do something obvious - I don't mind looking like an idiot as long as I get my JU-06A working :-)
Thanks for your help and advice.

Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
When installing these drivers, the guidance is to leave the device disconnected during the install. From reading your note, it seems you had it connected during install. Not sure if that could be the issue.
Can you see the JU06A icon in system prefs and bring up the prefs panel?

In System Preferences, you should see icons for each Roland device you've installed a driver for. Do you see an icon for the JU-06A? If so, when you click it, does it indicate the device is offline or show any other kind of message or error?

Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
Hey evilpants,
I saw that you had not replied to your question since the last few bits of help or advice, so I thought I would check out my JU-06A and chime in; here's what I can tell you.
I have a 2019 MacBook Pro running 10.14.6 Mojave.
I installed the specified driver from the Roland website. (I actually did install the driver while the JU-06A was connected and GarageBand was open - I had no issues with install.)
After installing and restarting, there is an icon for the JU-06A at the bottom of my System Preferences pane (not in the sound sub-directory).
The JU-06A is easily seen by GarageBand with no additional setup required. I can make changes and adjustments within the Audio/MIDI preferences of GarageBand.
It's functioning correctly both as a MIDI controller and audio interface for GarageBand.
Hopefully you can sort out whatever is stopping you, but on my end here, installation and function of the driver and the JU-06A are both working perfectly on my MacBook Pro.
Best of luck!

Hi everyone - I was certain I'd set the site to email me when I had a response; I assumed no one had replied :-)
Sorry! And thank you all for your replies and thoughts. I really do appreciate it. It's also good to hear that people have it working as it should, so it's definitely something going wrong at my end, rather than a driver failure or other software fault.
OK:
Yep, it's in System Preferences. I've got the JU-06a connected and powered up, and upon clicking the icon in System Preferences, I see no error or anything.
It just shows Boutique JU-06A in the dropdown menu at the top, then SAMPLE RATE 44100Hz, Audio Buffer Size slider set to the halfway point, Recording Margin 0ms, Recording Timing 0 Samples, Version 1.0.1 and two buttons - Revert and Apply
Thanks again everyone

OK:
I've realised I wasn't clear on some things in my post (you know when you think you've been really clear, then you come back a week later and realise you were clear as mud?) I followed their instructions to the letter, so I did leave it disconnected up until the restart after installation. I'm an "expert-level" computer guy, but when I'm doing things I don't quite understand, I do it exactly as the instructions tell me to.cloudburst wrote:When installing these drivers, the guidance is to leave the device disconnected during the install. Another one I forgot to address in my initial post. It's amazing when you think you've covered everything but then you realise you've left out some of the most basic bits of info!cloudburst wrote:Can you see the JU06A icon in system prefs and bring up the prefs panel?

This is really helpful. I make music in Reason, but I'm gonna start up GarageBand and see if I can get it working in there, just in case the issue is with my other software.jicamasalad wrote:The JU-06A is easily seen by GarageBand with no additional setup required. Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
Do any of you have other Boutique drivers installed?
I've got 3xJP-08 (I know, I know - a bit of a silly decision), 1xTR-09, 1xSE-02 and the Aria app customiser (the one that allows you to create different devices inside the effects units that they made a few years ago. I have a "Demora" delay unit which is brilliant; the Aira customiser allows different parts of the firmware to be unlocked and effectively turns it into a multi-effects unit. Really amazing - and in typical Roland style, abandoned so it will stop working in future OS updates).
I'm wondering if something is conflicting, even though there's no error message coming from any device or software. I'm dreading what I believe might work: removing one or all of my other Boutiques from my Mac.

Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
I have five boutiques (SE-02, SH-01A, TB-03, TR-08, TR-09) and a System-8, all of which use the same basic driver. They're all connected and working at the same time.evilpants wrote:Do any of you have other Boutique drivers installed?

Also, the Aira Customizer has not been abandoned. It was recently updated for (or at least tested and confirmed working with) Catalina:

Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
I have pretty much an identical issue on my MacBook but with an SH01A.
I've tried multiple USB cables to no luck.
I'm going to give the MacBook a fresh install and se if that helps.
I'll update if I have any joy.

Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
I'm having the same exactly issues with my SH-01A too, I've installed the drivers with everything disconnected and followed the exact instructions as outlined on the READ ME file.. Tried to uninstalled and re-install at least 3 or 4 times and still can't get the drivers to show up in the Audio Midi Set Up or System Prefs.. Had no issues with my SE-02 btwMichaelDon wrote:I have pretty much an identical issue on my MacBook but with an SH01A.

Anywho, I'm running 10.12.6 on a MBP 13" 2015.. If anyone has a solution for this I would greatly appreciate the assistance.. I've also sent an eMail to Roland support so hopefully figure out it out sooner rather than later!
Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
In my case JU-06A is recognized as an audio driver, but not as a midi device (which is what I want).
It show audio settings in System Preferences, but It doesn't show as a midi device in Audio Midi Setup app, and in any Daw either.
No matter how many times I tried to uninstall and reinstall following the guide steps.
Driver 1.0.0 (for 10.4 OSX)
MacBook Pro i9 (15-inch, 2019) and OSX 10.4.6.
Tried different USB cables and ports.
I wish there's a workaround.

Hi, thanks... yes, I tried word by word multiple times.wave wrote: ↑23:30, 26 March 2021 Have you thoroughly foowed these instructions?

Sadly, Midi never showed up via USB.
Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
As a last attempt, I would search inside MacOS System folder the relevant Roland driver .plist file with Find Any File, a very useful application that finds also hidden files. Once found that .plist delete it and perform another install.eluke wrote: ↑00:02, 27 March 2021Hi, thanks... yes, I tried word by word multiple times.wave wrote: ↑23:30, 26 March 2021 Have you thoroughly foowed these instructions?

I would love to try that. Do you know if there's a list of files, Roland drive installs?
Thanks!!
Re: JU-06A isn't visible on my MacBook
Unfortunately I'm not aware of that. In any case you can detect a logical relationship among files sorting them by date and name. Alternatively you might drop a line to Roland USA.eluke wrote: ↑23:10, 27 March 2021

As far as I can see inside the installer file package for OSX 10.13/10.14 there's also an uninstaller.
