New to Cloud and Just bought a RD 88

Post by lancelipinsky »

Hi

My name is Lance and I am using Roland Cloud for the first time.

I recently bought an RD88. I bought it because you can import tones onto it and its lightweight. For all of my career, I traveled internationally with an old Roland FP2. It has great pianos and organ and was only 30 pounds so I could bring it on the plane.

The FP2's are getting harder to find and they weren't that well made and break easy. I'm trying out the RD88 for the first time. I need specific organ sounds that isn't on the RD88 and I was hoping to download them off the Cloud. This is the first time using it.

the Roland cloud manager is confusing and not user friendly in the sense of finding specifc things. From what I can see, there is no way to simply search for "pianos" or "organs".... It just seems to be dozens of packages that has different sounds scattered and it doesn't seem to be organized. For instance, if I click on Hardware, and then RD88, there is about 30 different categories of packages and most of them are synths. Where is the thousands of tones this cloud apparently has? This program isn't what I expected. When you click on these different packages, it just offeres random tones and there maybe are at most 10 different sounds. I am not seeing this vast, diverse database that I imagined.

Where would I go specifically if I wanted 1960's retro style organs? I should be able to type in "farfisa" or "vox continetal. Instead, I have to search through these packages that don't seem to offer much than synths for techno. If I wanted retro organs or bright "boogie woogie" piano tones, where would I begin that hunt?

Someone told me you can download anything Roland has ever made... How would I go about finding the bright piano tone and the certain beloved organ #3,5,6 and 7 off my old FP2?!...

Furthermore, the file that is lets me download off Roland Cloud isn't compatible with the Roland RD 88. The manual says in order to import a tone, it needs to be an svz file. When I download off the cloud program, it is an exz file.

Last, is there a third party company or person anyone could recommend to make custom instruments that would be compatible with importing them onto the RD88?

Here's a few specific organs I'm looking for:

the Clavioline from Del Shannon's Runaway
Organ sound from Chris Montez's Let's Dance
Organ sound from Telstar by the Ventures
Organ sounds from the Doors

thanks for your time

1. Ensure your system software is up to date. Download the updated instructions from Roland.com on how to load both expansions and sound packs. I have not seen anything that indicates how many expansions can be installed on the RD88, but suspect it is two. https://www.roland.com/us/products/rd-88/support/

2. It is much easier to audition sounds using the Zenology DAW plug in, then purchasing only the ones you want for the RD-88.

3. For classic sounds, dig around in EX Zed 008 and 015. 008 is the old SRX-07, 015 is the RD-2000 EXP-6.

4. On the Jupe page, there is a searchable spreadsheet of all the EX Zed tones. viewtopic.php?f=67&t=57222#p318928

Both EXZ and SVZ files are compatible with the RD-88. They are different kinds of files though ... SVZ is just a set of parameters or program settings, EXZ also contains wavesample data.

They load into the RD-88 using different procedures.

You have to be on rev 1.10 or above of the RD-88 OS/Firmware.

Hi, my name is Claude, I just bought a RD-88 too. Very happy with it.

I have a question concerning the EXZ files.

How to know where in the banks will the new sounds go, and so what will be erased ?

I did not find any clear information about it.

Thanks in advance for any clarification.

The expansions have their own memory area, which can hold two packs. No user tones are over written.

Since you can only hold two, it will show which are loaded, so you can choose which to swap out.

Hi DesertBoat,

thanks for your reply.

And I found a very useful Roland youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1vWXMq52nQ

that clearly explains how to use the loaded expansions or sounds packs.
