That GREEN light...*gah*

Post by bldrman »

I really hope that Roland will provide a way to control the intensity of the leds in the next firmware update. Since I'm not using the System-1 on stage (only in my studio/room), I really don't need it to overshine all my other equipment. It's just too much...!

One (crazy) idea would be to open up the S-1 and change all the LED to something more comfortable...like white/greyish. Wonder if that's even possible...and how much work it would be? Any ideas?

I know someone who customized the LED's in his Korg Radias to get different colors for each virtual module. I believe I remember him saying you have to be careful that your replacement LED's have the same voltage/current requirements as the existing ones, if not you might have to do some resistor mods ;-)

I'd love to swap out the LED's myself, but judging from this video, the LED's are very VERY small, and would be rather tricky to replace IMO.

Thx for the tip/youtube clip...found another one w the same guy open up a showing the System-1 inside. And yes, the LED's are very small and hard to replace. Probably almost impossible to do it yourself. Hard to see if you need to do some soldering or not...

Oh yeah. You'd have to solder, no question. And your soldering skills would have to be shit hot.

Hi there.
I'm new here and this is my first post on the forum.
Anyway, i got a system-1 a week ago and the leds were really annoying.

The good news is it is fixable.
The bad news is you need to screw the control board out, which may not be your cup of tea.

The fix is actually pretty simple
I used a black permanent marker (type Snowman NG) on the top side of the leds.
It doesn't block all light from the leds.
What it does is make them dark enough to not induce a catatonic headache.
In fact, now they are perfect. Very nice for low light environments. Still clearly visible but not 'shining' (you know what i mean :) )
You can undo the mod by rubbing the leds with alcohol on a cotton swab.

There is a downside tho.
A few days ago i was sittng outside in the sun with the system-1 and i couldn't see anything. And this was with the unmodded leds.
So if you mod them you won't be able so see anything in bright light.

That was actually quite a good idea...and *pretty* easy to manage. :-)
Why not upload a pic...would really appreciate it.

I hope this is what you mean because i don't want to screw it open again. :)
Notice that the leds look about as bright as the green stripes on the sides.
This is exactly what i get in real life. It looks like the led color is part of the interface now. My eyes have stopped hurting now.

The System-1 LEDs are NOT that bad guys. Now the TR-8, when it first came out, had bright LEDs! The TR-8 colored buttons were offensively bright it hurt my eyes! Roland did offer an update that though.

Ok, so lets say it:

You need to disassembly the unit, look for every led and use acrylic black or grey or any other model painting kit color, jus use very small brush and take care to paint only diode itself.

TIP: You can paint more than one coat to dim it more, just wait until it fully dry before painting once more.

Thank me later.

MAYBE (I SAY MAYBE) those ones:

= most of the green leds gone! (except sliders).

That's the EASIEST way !

I love your solution! I've been covering this thing up with a towel. Can you share the knob specs you used? (e.g.: https://www.dhgate.com/product/integrat ... 0178595529)
