First Impression

Post by Spo Elman »

So i got my Fa-06 today. First impression: lots of features for the money.
The overall feeling of the board is a bit cheap, plastic. |The keys are small and not the best... But the sounds and workflow is very good so far. Picking sounds and editing them is very easy. The sounds are good (I just sold my Integra and have a Kronos too) good sounds. Brass sounds are not that good as,. But in a few months i will get the free SRX10 available for download, so :-)

for the record: i just sold my integra, live is use a Kronos and Nord Stage Piano. I don't think the Fa could replace one of them (maybe if it had more outputs?)

for just 1000,- you cant go wrong on this one..

Thx spo elman. I have been debating whether I should sell my integra and get FA.
With your feedback, I may keep it and get a moxf or motif xf for Yamaha sounds.
But need to play FA before I do anything;)

you're welcome.. In my case the FA replaces the Integra perfect: sure it has less sounds, but the ones i need are there (the 6000 sounds in the Integra are too much for me (i can tweak the sounds in the FA also and create thousands). With the free srx downloads, the fact it has keys and its 512 user slots makes it a better combination with Cubase 7 for me then the integra. Also for live it's easier ofcourse (the keys and quick programming)

Spo, how do you find editing/creating synth sounds with the cursor keys and such? I'm thinking of buying an fa and I'm worried I would miss more interface/knobs for sound creation.

Which do find better sounding, the supernatural synth engine or the kronos synths?

when you're useds to the |Kronos touch screen, working with the knobs/cursors is a step back.. But with the kkob assign mode the most typical sound editing parameters are can be apllied quickly. Ofcourse the Kronos goes deeper. Which sound better is a matter of taste i believe. They're both good. If it comes down to pure editing and synth sounds, ofcourse the Kronos wins, cause of more possibilities and engines.

And for a 61 key Kronos, at least 2.5 times the price of the FA ;-)

BTW, congrats on your purchase spo elman!

you swapped an integra for the FA. In your opinion the integra was redundant now that you have a FA?

Integra is not equal to FA for 2 reasons.
Surround sound and amount of usable sounds.
But FA offers other things sequencer and nicer work flow.
So I can see FA replacing integra for many people.
Roland will need to do something if they were selling a lot of integra.
But they did not sell a lot, FA will sell well.

How are you using FA with kronos? I own a kronos as we'll.
Have been contemplating on how to use FA with it.

The FA I use for the studio for quick ideas etc. The kronos and nord are for live play... But i could see a setp with a kronos 88 and Fa06, the roland then can be used for the more traditional commercial sounds

For the sounds I need the FA could never be a replacement of the Integra. I need realistic symphonic sounds, mostly as ensemble sounds. This makes the three SRX boards SRX06, 04 and 10 indispensible. I'm also a great fan of the versatile SRX09 World board. No chance to use the FA in this way. Of course it really depends on the sounds you need and your other equipment.

I know all these boards. I think then srx 04 is not needede when you have the FA. For brass one could need the 10 but it still remains brass out of a synth ;-), for other orchestral sounds the 6 would be a good addition. With all sr boards coming for free, i still think the fa is a good competitor on the sounds, besides all the extras (keys, control, ease of use etc).
