In trying to make song patterns I'm getting nowhere then my last previously detailed post about the weird "step record" screen.

Again for edification, from the mixer screen I hit song edit. From there I hit pattern F2. From their choosing patterns one through 100, I hit record. I then hit step record after Setting my parameters and choosing patterns one through 100 on the record track. I can then hit Step record which takes me to a step record standby screen. From here my pattern track is recognized and I can either hit note or play to start recording within the previously set parameters. This takes me to that weird step recording screen but I didn't like so much as previously mentioned in the above mentioned post.

Just to be clear, is it the step recording from this strange step recording screen that makes a pattern within that song file? Or is there yet something that I'm not doing because that is as close as I can come.

You're right, it seems our posts crossed each other...he he.

Ok, so now you need to save your pattern as PTN001. So when you are in step 4 and try to select a pattern you should see that PTN001 is no longer an empty pattern.

Yes. So is this the assignment? Is it assigned? Is there way to get this thing into a song at this point?

It is in the song. It is now in track 1 of the song. If you hit the play button then track 1 will call the pattern that you created. You can place that pattern at different parts of your song by using step recording.

And it will always be in that same track? Why did pattern one go to track one? Where would pattern 100 go?

You can step record the patterns to any of tracks 1 - 16, not just track 1. You can also place any of patterns 1 - 100 anywhere in any of those tracks. So you can place in pattern 1, the 2, then 4 then 3...whatever suits you.

So here's what I see immediately from what we've just done tonight: I could record musical phrases or I can record rhythm phrases into those pattern presets. I can do this via step recording or I can do this live. Once I have all the patterns I need to complete a song I can then place them in time where I need them via the step recorder i.e.: I can make the Start point only the next measure after the measure I just recorded or even a previous measure but can put the Start point anywhere within that measure. I haven't done this yet but I think I see the overall of the project.

Oh it's morning now I'm going to try this that we've talked about last night. Thanks Howard S for your help so far I kind of fell off to sleep after the last postings - last night was pretty late

Okay! That was what I needed to know. Thank you HowardS - you save me from a jam. Roland should be ashamed of itself for making that so difficult. That was such an important piece of the puzzle that the floodgates have open for me today - have been going crazy on this thing. I'm going to start another thread separate from this thread that explains step-by-step the process that you go through to assign these rhythm patterns to these phrase tracks.

Oh, that's great, Indykeys. As I said in my first post on this, I don't assign patterns to phrase tracks so I just read all the steps on page 176 when I initially tried it and it worked right away. I guess I had the advantage of having previously used patterns in song files so I knew what they were talking about right away. I think the confusing thing here is that the manual refers to several things as patterns. Anyhow, I am glad to have helped you through it and that the floodgates have opened! Good luck and post any other questions that you have on your X8.
