JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Thanks a lot Cello
You are very helpful.
Maybe if you go ot see Euro 2012 in football to Warsaw, I invite you for Polish beer or Vodka :)
Btw, do I have to go one by one, repeating the operation for every sound, or I just highligt the group of registrations etc. I want to move and do it in one operation?
Would the registration sound the same as in ver. 1.x? Or I have to save all, down to individual tones?
When in your list there are the same registrations in ver. 1 and 2 (highlighted in orange) - they sound exactly the same as both OS versions?
So if I can count, after making copy of registration missing in ver 2, in total I should have 166 registrations - to have the full set of factory released registrations by Roland, correct?
Greetings
Mike

Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Very well explained as usually Cello!!cello wrote:Hi Mike - one of the enhancements that were introduced in v1.1 was the ability to export and import single or groups of sounds. This is also in v2.0.
What you do is go to System and go to the second page then select 'Export'. You are then presented with all the sound lists; Registrations, Livesets and Tones. You select the ones you want to export - perhaps using my spreadsheet as a guide. The sounds will be saved on your USB stick - give it a useful name.
Then, just as a fall back, do a full backup from the System page.
Next do the factory restore, which will introduce the v2.0 sounds.
Go back to the 2nd System page and select 'Import'. Your USB stick will be searched for files that can be imported. You then select where you want them to go. Once you've gone through all the sounds, hit Import and you will now have the v2.0 sounds and the v1.x sounds.
Hope that helps! :)
Yesterday I tried JP-80 for the second time. It was just a few minutes, so it was just quick search for sounds and Registrations that would suit me. No matter which one I chose, the majority of sounds were stunning, however without tweaking the original Tones, some Pianos, organs and guitars seemed a bit dull to me compared to what I used to get with my Fantom Xa without tweaking.
On the SN acoustic tones, specially strings, brasses, pads and solo instruments, the sounds are Incredible!!!
I had no time for more this time...
Unfortunately This baby had the 1.04 release loaded still, so no 2.0 features to play around :-(
And I fully agree with Mojkarma, that this keyboard sucks big time, because I don't have one in my studio ;-) lol
Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Many thanks to Cello for his work in demystifying the sound changes from v1 to v2.
One more query to Cello:
I have just been comparing the JP-80 V.1.0 and V.2.0 sound lists. It appears that there have been many changes and additions (to accommodate the new filters and MFX routings, no doubt). However, one thing is rather confusing – looking at the Supernatural Synth Tone lists, for some reason Tone 1283 Slow Lead 2 has disappeared from the V.2.0 list and all subsequent Tones have moved up one slot (and so down by one number). Does this mean that if a Version 1.0 Registration that uses any of these Tones is loaded into a Jupiter-80 that has been updated to Version 2.0, the Registration will use the wrong Tones?
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
I'm pleased that devnor seems positive in his response! I'm not so sure though... Maybe because of the way I imported the v1 sounds though.
As I've advised in other posts, I made an export (ie not the backup procedure) of the v1 sounds I wanted to keep. During the import routine once v2 was installed, the user can determine where the registrations, LIvesets and tones can go. I put all of them in the first available init slots, ie at the end of the relevant banks. This meant that I didn't overwrite those that were pre 1283 slot.
The issue then is that I now have two versions of some livesets and tones...
So I guess that's the two options - when importing you can either choose to overwite the existing tones (which may make the new sounds using that tone 'different' in some way) OR allocate the tones into the next available init slot which then creates a duplicate that may or may not be the same as the pre-1283 tone(s).

Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Its no different than any other hardware synth. Registrations and livesets will use the memory location number - not the tone or liveset (file) name. So if you replace a piano sound at location 0001 with a lead sound, anything that used the 0001 "patch" will now sound like a lead.
Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Hello
So now I am confused again.
So is there any possible way to have the vers. 1.x registrations sounding exactly the same on ver.2 , since they could refer to the tones they wee not designed for?
Or maybe I ask simple question - is it any way that I can have both, registrations from vers.1.x sounding as designed in 1.x and new registrations from ver.2 sounding as designed in ver. 2 - without any compromise?
Regards
Mike

Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Yes - the way I described above will do that:
1. With v1.1 installed, do an export (2nd page of system menu) and select the sounds you want to install beside the v2 sounds.
2. Install v2.
3. Restart and then do factory restore (1st page of system menu). Restart again.
4. Go to Import (system menu, 2nd page) and find the export file on the USB stick you exported to
5. Put all v1.x registrations, livesets and tones you wanted to have, in the first empty slot for each category (the system won't let you import all sounds involved have been allocated a position - you have to mark the sounds and then mark the destination slots for each one).
6. That's it. You now have all the v2 sounds PLUS the v1.x sounds - now do a backup (system menu 1st page) so you don't have to do it all again!

Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Sorry Cello, but I do not understand point 55. Put all v1.x registrations, livesets and tones you wanted to have, in the first empty slot for each category (the system won't let you import all sounds involved have been allocated a position - you have to mark the sounds and then mark the destination slots for each one).
I marked registrations I wanted to copy from version 1, doing that also live sets and tomes were marked by itself, and when I wanted to press import, i have the tones marked on red and message that tones were not selected.
So I do not know what have I done wrong ... :(((
Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Have you already imported some V1 registrations? When I tried to import all the V1 registrations that were not in V2, each reg also imported all its tones into the empty tone slots in V2. There are not a lot of empty tone slots in the JP-80 with V2 installed, and after importing a dozen regs or so I ran out of tone slots. The error message was inaccurate, I think the same message you are getting, and it took forever to figure out what I was going wrong. The empty tone slots it can use are those named "initial" or something like that. It's been a couple weeks since I looked at it. Let me know if this it it. I believe you can somehow force it to import the tones on top of tones that are there, but the default is to import them into empty slots and fail when there are no empties left.Mike-pol wrote:

Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Yes, I managed to import 26 registrations.
When I mark more registrations, red letters on tones appeared, so I had to reduce the number. So now I managed to import 27 regs, and can not import anything anymore, since the empty slots are probably full.
Maybe someone somehow went around that and managed to load all?
Thanks
Mike

I got this too when I was first experimenting - the red and orange coloured text; took me a while to figure out why import kept failing!Mike-pol wrote:Yes, I managed to import 26 registrations.

First of all you have to understand I wasn't trying to bring many sounds over - to be honest it was mainly my own sounds that were in v1.1 that I wanted plus a few other factory sounds.
The only solution I found was that at the bottom of the import screen there are tabs for registrations, livesets and tones. If you miss one single element out, the import fails. If the numbers say 16/16 and are in orange, then that's good. But then you have to go to the next level down, and get orange again my marking the livesets associated with the Registrations (16/16). So you now have 16/16 and 89/89 in orange (for example).
Next you go down to tones - make them all orange so that you have 16/16, 89/89 and 248/248 all in orange. Now hit import and it will work :)
(Please note the numbers are just made up - it will be different for us all depending on how many sounds we are importing.)
Anyway, hope this helps a bit.
Re: JP-80 v1/v2 Soundlist comparison
Yes, i think i got it now
Of I am correct, marking registrations, system automatically marks live sets and tones associated with them. There are many empty slots for registrations, but probably not as many for tones, and each registration takes say 4 or more tones, so marking say 12 regs means say 50 or so tones are marked too.
Please someone corerct me if I am wrong here.
So as I understand, I have to be more selective and just choose the regs I really wanted to import to v2.
I just misundesrtood you, Celllo, thinking it is possible just to import all missing 39 of them.
So now, when I do factory reset, I will come back to original vers. 2 registrations, and all imported sounds will be lost, so I can load them back say five or so at the time and choose which one to keep and which to delete?
Thanks for advice
Mike

New owner . Love it by the way
I've upgrade to 2.0

LOL!
Now that you've installed OSv2, you need to go to Menu/Restore then when prompted switch off and on. You should then have the v2 sounds.
You should maybe do a backup first so that you have the v1 sounds handy. Although the v1 sounds are downloadable at www.jp-80.com
