FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from external
FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from external
WHO ABOUT DOES PART GROUPS?!???!?!?!!
Ok, on to serious business.
I asked this same question back in 2008, and I don't think I ever figured it out. Now I am in need of an answer again.
I have a few sequences in Ableton Live. Since Ableton Live only allows you to export each clip as MIDI (not the whole track or sequence), it is quite a process to dump all of this into the FG. The easy route? Record into the FG's sequencer while Ableton Live plays back.
The problem is that the Fantom G will register ALL PART GROUPS for each MIDI event that it receives from an external source. It doesn't register 4 separate events, one for each part group; it registers 1 event, which will have all 4 part groups on (if you go into Microscope view, all 4 part groups are lit for every event).
I haven't found a way to either avoid this, or to fix it once it's there (change channel doesn't do anything under phrase edit).
Things that I've tried that result in the same 4 part groups being registered:
-Receiving MIDI from Ableton Live via USB
-Receiving from Fantom X via MIDI cable
-Receiving MIDI from the Fantom G itself by connecting a cable from MIDI IN to MIDI OUT, assigning EXTERNAL to playback track, and INTERNAL to recording track (i.e. phrase).
Am I the only one going through this? I really hope not.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from exte
CRAP!!!
I think I just found the answer I DID NOT WANT TO HEAR.

Third post, by Apex.
So, how in hell will I be able to thin out the part groups I don't need? The biggest problem is that, when playing live, I have the Fantom X receiving MIDI data from the Fantom G, and any sequence dumped from Ableton Live into the Fantom G would then also trigger the FX's sounds.
I may have to use a "middleman" that is able to export the whole sequence as a MIDI file, and not just individual clips (like stoopid Ableton Live).
Time to go to bed.

Re: FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from exte
There would be a way to solve this, wich is similar to the "Extract" function that you have in the Fantom X.
Record your phrase from external module, and go to phrase edit - copy. Select the only channel you want to have in the recording and copy it at the end of the phrase. Then delete the "multichannel" part.
To thin out channels you don't need, theoretically the only solution would be to turn off the Rx for them.

Thanks. The problem is not with channels, but with groups. For example, one MIDI event for channel 1 will have all 4 groups assigned, and when I copy it I'm pretty sure it will keep all groups ( but i'll still try out of desperation). What I need is a way to extract only one group (internal), but it doesn't seem possible. I would love to be wrong.

I'M A GENIUS! I'M A GENIUS!
OK, maybe not a genius, but right now I feel like one. Thanks to G-Man for the inspiration.
A relatively easy way to keep only one part group and eliminate the rest is to save the phrase as SMF, which gives you the option to choose the part group to save (in my case, Internal), and then import that SMF file back into a phrase. TA DAAAAA!!!
Now I gotta do that with 30 or so phrases... =( Still better than the alternative.

Thanks for sharing Mexico !,
in songmode you can also assign to which group the phrase is routed , if you put this to internal (the external , exp1 , exp2 are also not heard).
But , saving it first as SMF with internal only , as you propose, cleans it up nicely.

Re: FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from exte
You are correct about assigning the group in song mode, but since I'm sending MIDI data to the Fantom X, I have to keep it as Phrase.
Ideally, this would be a modify function, but that'll never happen. :(

Mexico - when executing copy from phrase modify menu, you can select not only the midi channel to be copied, but also the part group containing that desired midi channel. There are also some other phrase modify operations that allow yow to select the part group.
That, of course, if your O.S. is upgraded to the last version ;]

Re: FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from exte
Theoretically that would work. It doesn't.
When you select a specific group, the Fantom G filters events that have ONLY that group assigned, bypassing any event with all groups assigned. In other words, if I select Internal, the Fantom will not copy any of my events, due to the fact that none of them have only the Internal group assigned.
I, like you, thought that this would be easily doable via the Modify operations, but I have not come across any that actually work. Please let me know if you do. ;)
Thanks.

Re: FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from exte
You have made me really curious, so I tried to record something midi into the G. Indeed, a single event has all the part groups attached to it, and copy doesn't work. However, something else does D
From Phrase Menu - Modify, select Change channel. Set Src Part Group to ALL and Dst Part Group to Internal.
I tried it and it works.

Re: FG records all part groups when receiving MIDI from exte
God bless your soul! I only tried changing from External to Internal; why didn't I try All?
Thanks for the discovery!

Ok... I'll try that too.
