Playing Pad stuff from the keyboard???????Chord Changes?

Post by ronniecruisin »

Hi All.....I'm a bit confused. Some keyboards I've had before had could play phrases etc. and you just formed chords on the board and it faithfully followed the changes..How do you use the phrases on the pads in a song to follow the chord changes...They are playing in the one key all the time. And how do you make minor chords. Every thing seems to be major. The manual does'nt seem to cover this.

the type of keyboard you are referring to is an arranger, and the fantom G is not an arranger.. you would need to sequence your song then play along with it.

Ok.............But what use is a bass line and accoustic guitar pattern playing when you press a pad if you can't change the chords to create a completed song???

you need to go into the song mode, record your own acoustic guitar pattern with the chord changes. (same for a separate bass line) (these are called phrases)

then call up the new "phrase" with one of the pads in the live mode.

once a phrase is recorded it will never change. you cannot change chord progressions in realtime (it has to be pre recorded).

The arpeggiator in the Motif XS could do this to an extent. but as Mystic said above - the best thing for this is an arranger keyboard.

just to add - you need to create different chord progressions and assign them to different pads.

so PAD 1 could be bassline (Amin, F, G) in a loop
then PAD 2 - (Dmin, F G) - etc etc

PAD 3 - bridge
Pad 4 - something else.

OK I think I get what your saying....But does this mean that all the prases that Roland have given us basically can not be used to create a full chorded song in the sequencer??? If you have to create all your own what good are all the preset prases that Roland have given us. I mean I don't mind doing my own, but having all the preset ones seems a bit pointless if you can't record them into the sequencer as a complete with all the chord changes song. Are they only good for jamming along in the same chord progression???

You can edit the phrase, change the relevant notes that would turn it into a minor chord or whatever you need, and save it as a seperate phrase.

O.K. I see what you mean Gil. That would work.! Would have been a lot more user friendly if Roland had given the Fantom some arranger capabillity though IMHO. considering they have given us all those lovely phrases to play with. Might be worth getting a Motif Rack to go with it. I think it can do more in that way than the Fantom. The reason I chose the Fantom over the Motif was Rolands superior sequencer with the all in one midi and audio track capabillity without having to connect to a computer and The big screen. It's a pity you can't weld a Fantom and a Motif together in one machine. Now that would be something else hey?????????????????

I read this whole thread, could someone give me a good example of an "arranger" keyboard?
