Layering cutoff & resonance onto a recorded Midi track

Post by Nickle Tech »

Hey guys, picked up my Fantom G8 last week and am trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong with my layering efforts. I appear to be getting inconsistent results upon playback after manipulating Cutoff Frequency & Resonance settings against a recorded MIDI track. I tried priming the recording 1 measure early and setting the desired parameters to zero value (using sliders & knobs) then manipulating when the tracks start but that doesn't seem to be solving the problem. Upon Playback the parameters seem to be either starting off on the wrong value, missing altogether or in the wrong spot... I'm getting mixed results.

Does any of that make sense and is there something obvious I need to do (i.e. via a system or tack setting) to make this work properly?

Your feedback is highly appreciated!

How do you change cuttof & resonance values?
I guess you use the predifined generic CC numbers for those messages.

I don't know what's the problem, but if I were you, I'd go to the specific patch and assign cutoff and resonance the modulation matrix, i.e. specify two control sources to modulate cutoff and resonance, like modulation (CC01) and breath control (CC02). Then assign CC01 and CC02 to a pair of sliders or knobs and use those to change cutoff and resonance.

Thanks for the reply Cyclops. I definitely know how to assign cutoff & resonance to the sliders, it sounds like you're suggesting I go into the patch pro edit menu and assign them to that specific sounds. I'll have to try that tonight.

In a nutshell I recorded a couple of phrases in studio mode and want to assign realtime controls back on top of those phrases. When I did it by the standard Shift+Slider I was able to assign cutoff & resonance to the appropriate sliders, however, when I tried to layer that data on top of a pre-recorded Midi phrase it didn't translate as recorded upon playback.

Does that make sense? I'll try your Patch Pro edit tonight and let you know if that does the trick. Thanks again.

Figured this out for those who see my topic and are wondering how to do the same thing - the keyword I should have used should have been "automation". The trick here is to go to the system menu, knob/slider menu and flip the knob slider mode to "catch" which as the manual so eloquently puts it will "allow control data [from sliders / knobs] to output only after the knob or slider position has passed through the value of the parameter [parameter data you're layering over an existing track]... vs immediately be output as control data (under direct mode) depending on where the slider or knob is at any given time - which is what the system is set at by default.

Here's a great video on how to do it.

For most of you on this forum you've already figured it out and this is probably obvious but for us newbies - it's definitely a learning process :-)

Thanks guys.

Wow...thanks for sharing the video, Nickle! I just learned how to do automation in Logic, and I was racking my brain trying to figure it out on the FG. Good stuff..........don't feel bad, I've been a beginner for the past 6 months!
