how to replace the molding around the screen?

Post by MichaelJohn »

Is it possible to replace the molding around the screen? I got a few nicks on it. Can that part be ordered and do it yourself? Is it plastic or metal? Also, I have a few minor scratches on the top silver surface, can they be buffed or wiped out?

it's probably expensive to replace. might want to consider getting silver vinyl sheet, cut it to shape, and covering it like paint. :)

the silver on the panel is painted so if you polish it, you can potentially go through the paint...

thanks but I prefer using official parts. Where to order parts like knobs, etc? I may decide to replace the whole top piece. Anyone ever open their keyboard and accessed the inside? The top cover may not be that difficult to replace (if I can't get just the frame around the screen).

My Fan G7 was delivered with a tiny chip in the finish of the Frame.

I called Roland parts department in California and found out that the Frame for the display is $21.20 +$6 shipping - you can call them at 323-890-3700 prompts 1,2,1.

I believe the Frame is plastic - similar to the endbells and a suggestion was made to use Krylon Chrome Aluminum spray paint in this thread:

I will probably be going the patch/sand/spray-paint route - not sure how easy it would be to replace the Frame and the Parts Department said they couldn't give any information on replacement.

CJoy, thanks for the info- I will be calling. How can you patch a dent in plastic? (I have two small dents) and painting over a patch never looks like new. Replacing the frame could be easy or difficult, seems no one around here has opened their G?

You're welcome!

For a dent you would pretty much treat it like an auto body repair.

You could get some kind of polyester resin putty (for example Bondo in the US) and you apply it and keep sanding with finer and finer sand paper until it is smooth and then you spray paint.

I've emailed Roland support to ask them how to replace the Frame.

My screen frame is loose at the bottom and comes up about 1mm or so if you put your fingernail under it.
The frame seems to be solidly attached at the side and top however, so I imagine that there are internal screws keeping it in place.
I opened my Roland D20 up one time to clean it out an dit involved taking all the screws out the bottom and disconnecting the end cheeks - was quite simple. I think that when it came apart the main circuit board was attached to the bottom but there was other boards/components blocking access to the screen at the top. I know this is a totally different keyboard but I imagine it may be similar.
You may have to remove some internal components to get to the back of the screen. Feelling confident ??

Would like to know how you get on in case I need to replace my loose frame in the future. Hope it's not as difficult as I imagine.

Good luck

Stevo..

Here is my email to and reply from Roland Support:

RE: Support Request
Product: Fantom-G7
Subject: How to replace the Frame for the display screen
Question: Hi,

Can you tell me how to replace the Frame that surrounds the display screen?

Thanks!

Hello Chris,
Based on the information you have provided us, it appears your Fantom-G7 may need service.

If you need to have your Roland product serviced, you have two options;

You can use our Service Center Locator at http://www.rolandus.com/support/service_centers/ to locate an authorized Roland Service Center in your area, or you can send the unit directly to our facility in Los Angeles.

If you would like to send the product to the Los Angeles facility, you must first call our Customer Service department to obtain a Return Authorization number (RA#) before shipping the product. They will provide you with shipping details at that time.

Customer Service can be reached at 323-890-3700 x7705. They are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 5:00pm Pacific Standard Time.

Sincerely,
Roland Product Support

Good Luck - let us know how it goes!

I got my frame. It's plastic with silver paint, ready to install. Wish it was made of metal because the plastic is not a real hard plastic- it's slightly bendable (shows why it's easy to get nicks). It has about 10 screw hole posts on the back. Will try and replace tomorrow. I'll take pics of the process (if successfull)

I emailed Roland again to see if I could get more info and here is the new reply:

We spoke to our service techs on this, and unfortunately, you need to take apart most of the keyboard to get to the screen and the frame around it (they both attach from underneath the panel. If you are comfortable working on electronic devices, it may be possible for you to do this yourself, but we do not recommend it. If you would like to order any parts or a service manual for this product, you can call our Customer Support Department at 323-890-3700. They are available Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 5:00pm Pacific Standard Time.

Well I got it all open and got the old frame unit removed! However, the plastic 'glass' that protects the display was glued to the old frame, and I finally got it removed, but the glue will not come off around the edges of the 'glass', even with goo-gone. I'm letting it soak now with goo-gone for a while to see if that old glue will come off. Looks like thin double stick tape was used to secure the 'glass' to the frame.

And in the process of trying to remove the 'glass' I scratched the black area. So if I can get the glue off, and touch up the black area, I can use it, otherwise I now have to order the plastic shield.

It's not too bad really getting to it- remove three boards, and a lots of screws. There is always the danger of pinching one of the tape connectors. These tape connectors are very thin and delicate.

To access the inside- I set the Fantom upside down on some couch pillows, and removed the bottom (don't have to remove the sides). Here's a pic of the Fantom upside down with bottom removed. You can see the main board on the left, and the IO board on the right. I had to remove those to access the display unit seen deeper in the middle:
