Music production again

Post by kbrdist »

Hi folks,

Is there someone here who produces music (vocals included indeed) from the beginning to the end only with Fantom G as your main tool? Would you share your experiences please? I’m curious.

yes, i do... but not with vocals.

i do however plug in my Strat for multiple guitar tracks, and therefore use Audio Samples, which is essentially the same approach as vocals.

No other gear, just the FG and the Strat.

Cheers

I use song construction kits from vocal sample libraries such as "Vocal Foundry" and "Ultimate Vocals Vol 1" which can be downloaded from Producer loops. I import the wav files and trigger them as samples from a midi track, but of course they won't play unless you start them from the beginning. I believe it is possible to use them in audio tracks where they would sound from wherever you started the sequencer, but I haven't got round to that on the G yet.
In case you haven't had any experience of song construction kits I'm attaching a song I completed at the weekend done entirely on a G6 and using samples from "Vocal Foundry"
Good luck with your music making.

Thanks sexi for your post. I use mainly my gear for live. Now, my concern is about relying mainly on the Fantom G for the production (pre-, post-,… mastering). IMHO, there should be a minimum of quality that we should attain, let’s say for the production of an album. If you just want to make some music here and there for the fun (dance…), that’s okay. But for a serious work, could we rely only on the Fantom G for the refinement of our works so that they could meet the “norm” or the “professional” level? I have in mind here all these tools in the Fantom G. Any other experiences? Again thanks for your insights.

For the last few years I have had the luxury of making music purely for fun and only aspiring to making Soundclick-friendly mp3s. However the Fantom G has an XLR mic input with 48v phantom power which suggests they expect users to utilise high quality condenser mics as are found in a studio. They have also loaded the G with loads of their legendary effects which can be edited to suit any eventuality and it also can be used with a mouse which makes workflow so much quicker and the screen is pretty close to a fully fledged DAW.
With all that it must be possible to create tracks of the highest possible quality but only if you are prepared to take the time and trouble to discover the true pedigree of the instrument. I know a lot of G owners use them with a computer DAW but that's probably because they had the DAW first and have got used to working with it. You've already got a big community of users who are delighted to share their expertise with you so I would give the G a good workout and I'm sure you'll find you can achieve great results, good luck!

johnc, could you tell us the model of your mike?
It looks like an apex 460. Am I wrong?
Thanks!

Sexigenarian,

You are living my dream! I listened to your track, fantastic! I an an older person looking to break-in to music production. I just want to do it for fun. How did you come up with the idea for this song? I think your work is great. I am using a Fantom G8 and the new Roland GAIA as well as a Motif XS thanks to Apex's guidance. I currently run everything through an Apogee Ensemble into a Mac Pro. If I could just learn to program everything in the G that would be fantastic.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I use the Fantom G as my studio. I record in Audio my guitar, bass, voice and because Yamaha Dtxplorer electronic drum set did not follow the GM map, I have had great luck using the Audio in when recording. I will be getting a new brain for the set soon so I can stay in the midi world. I do play any keyboard parts on the Fantom. Just remember when you use Audio you are recording dry. But you will get use to it. Good Luck Dusty

Hi kbrdist this is what you can do with Fantom G8 there are no samples or vocals in this track just the pure sound of the keyboard itself enjoy
