Re: sonar 8 and fantom g6
sorry fogot to mention. all i want to do is use sonar to record midi using the midi instruments off the fantom g6. the reason for this is i also own a v-synth xt rack and i want to do the same with that. i wouldnt mind learning how to record audio to using the instrument sounds off the fantom g6
Re: sonar 8 and fantom g6
Using the Fantom-G as a MIDI keyboard to control and record VST instruments in Sonar 8 is really a piece of cake.
All you have to do is:
1. Install the Fantom-G USB driver, so that the computer recognizes it as a USB audio and MIDI interface.
Once you install the driver, you can connect the Fantom-G and the computer via a USB cable.
2. If you use another device as an audio interface, you can still use the Fantom-G as a MIDI interface.
So you have to go to "Options -> MIDI devices" and select the Fantom-G as an input and output device.
3. If you want to use the Fantom-G as a USB audio interface too, another thing you have to do is select it as an audio interface too, into "Options -> Audio". Select both its two inputs and its two outputs.
4. When you create an instrument track (or MIDI track), you can set each intrument to "listen" to a different Fantom-G MIDI channel.
5. Go into Fantom-G's Single mode and select "External". Choose a MIDI channel and normally you're gonna hear a certain VST instrument. If select another MIDI channel, you'll listen to another instrument.

Hi Bigjoe8707!
Cyclops is correct. "Using the Fantom-G as a MIDI keyboard to control and record VST instruments in Sonar 8 is really a piece of cake."
So is accessing the MIDI multi-tracking capabilty of the 'G' using a Sonar Instrument definition! This allows you to choose a Fantom patch from a list displayed with-in Sonar, as well as setting up the Fantom G specific controll change (CC) values properly.
1) Follow the first two steps that Cyclops mentioned.
2) Choose Options/Instruments in Sonar. If you do not see 'Fantom G' listed in the righ-hand column, you will want to download the Fantom G instrument definition found here.
To install the definition, click on the 'Define' button found to the right of the column. Then choose to 'Import'.
Browse to the file folder where you have saved the un-zipped definition. Open the 'ins' file and then high-light the Fantom G definitions you wish to import and then click on 'OK'.
Once this is done, close the 'Define Instruments' box. You should be at the 'Assign Instruments' box at this point.
3) High-light channels 1 through 16 in the Output/Channel column by holding your left mouse-click down and dragging. Release and then choose the Fantom G in the right-hand column. If you wish to access Rhythm on MIDI channel 10 automatically, high-light channel 10 in the right-hand column and then choose Fantom G rhythm in the left-hand column. All high-lighting can be done before you click on 'OK'.
4) Click 'OK'.By accessing 'Track Properties' in Sonar, you will now be able to choose any patches listed in the 'G' easily, as their names will be displayed!
BTW A couple of notes - Make sure that the Fantom is in Studio mode.
Also make sure to set it's MIDI transmit channel to channel 1. To do this, press the 'PAD MODE' button on the 'G', MIDI TX SW (Pad #6), and then make sure that Pad #1 is lit.
Hope that helps you out!

Re: sonar 8 and fantom g6
that is really helpful. i finally see light at the end of the tunnel. theres only a couple of things i would like to know now. how do you set the g up so when you hit record on the keyboard it records in sonar and the metronome doesnt seem to be sounding thorugh my keyboard an into my speakers. its not even sounding in my computer speakers. have i done something wrong . thanks. sorry to be a pain
Re: sonar 8 and fantom g6
In order to be able to listen to the metronome's sound, this is something you have to set from within Sonar. The metronome by default will be output through the audio interface's output. If your audio interface is the Fantom-G, then you'll hear the metronome, along with anything else, played or recorded within Sonar, from Fantom-G's output. If you use another interface, then the metronome will sound off the audio interface's output.
As for the other thing you're saying, no you can't force the Fantom-G's transport controls (Play, Rec, Stop etc) to control the Sonar's transport control.

thats where im stuck. for some reason ive got my keyboard setup right and connected by usb to the laptop but all i hear sound wise is the instruments i set in each channel. the only way i can hear the metranome is by pressing the sampling button and listening in via the input usb. this puzzles me though as im getting the instrument sounds. any sugestions?

Hi Bigjoe8707!
Within Sonar, go to Options/Project/Metronome. Choose the 'Use MIDI Note' option and then choose the Port and Channel if necessary. By default, this option should use your rhythm kit on MIDI channel 10.
Just an after-thought - If you wish to use the 'G' for audio playback from Sonar, including the metronome, you may want to check your 'Sounds and Audio Devices Properties' found in the Windows control panel. (XP) Under the 'Audio' tab, make sure that the Fantom G is chosen as your Sound Playback device.
Cheers!

Re: sonar 8 and fantom g6
i'm using sonar 8.5 PE with a fantom g6 (as well as propellerhead record/reason). When I record using the Fantom G sounds and quantize the MIDI notes there is a short delay before the first note. In other words it doesn't come in right on the downbeat.
Actually, from any point the cursor is on it doesn't come on the downbeat.
I have tried my Fantom G as the sound source and my M-Audio Firewire 410. If I use a VST or midi from record this doesn't happen. Only with the sound of the Fantom G. It seems like the Fantom G lags and then catches up to the timing of Sonar.
Any ideas?
