Announcing FX4S - the FX for FS Conversion Project

Post by Lawrencew »

I now have a page dedicated to my conversion project to make data from the Fantom-X available to Fantom-S users where it is compatible.

First up, thanks to help from Jim Rosand, is all 384 patches from the Fantom-X. These are available in both FSL and SVD files. And are available edited (i.e. appropriate patches from the FS selected) or uneditied. (see the web page for an explanation of why this editing is required).

Hopefully the next batch of data will be converted across soon, so keep a watch on this page

Well of course it doesn't give you the new Ultimate Piano or Nylon Guitar, as the patches on the FS still uses the good old FS waveforms.

Even so, there are still hundreds of very useable new patches for the FS user in this collection.

I am back from the dead. I was so sick that I was wishing that I were dead anyway.

Thank you guys so much. I know that this took a lot of work and I very much appreciate it. I will try to check these out later today but my wife is trying to keep me in bed for the entire day and I might not get a chance to check these out until sometime this weekend. I am only here now because she left the house for a few minutes.

Artemio, I will e-mail you back soon. I thought a lot about you the last 24 hours. Knowing that you must have gone through total hell for a very long time with your Hepatitis and survived gave me strength.

FYI, I have updated Bank H.

I realised there was a missing patch (022 Vox Chopper), which has now been corrected.

The Professor has done it; the Professor has done it! I have had a chance to listen to the edited banks (don’t think that I will worry about the unedited banks) and am very happy with the results. Lawrence, I think that you did a great job of picking appropriate waveforms from the F-S in these edited patches. Like I saw in a post of yours this morning there really is no way to get those new acoustic instrument patches into the F-S without the F-X waveforms. I do think that some of these piano patches can be improved though with some minor patch editing. They still won’t sound nearly as good as the F-X piano’s but I do think that they will be usable. In the brief time that I listened to these patches it sounded to me like some of the piano patches sounded pretty good on one half of the keyboard but did not sound good on the other half of the keyboard. I plan on playing with these a little and seeing if my limited patch editing skills can correct this. If I get anything better out of them I will let you know. Thanks again Jim and Lawrence.

I think there is ample opportunity to gradually improve some of these patches through programming. All I did this time through is choose some more appropriate waveforms.

If you would like to send me any improved versions for use in the collection, I am sure the community would be most grateful :-)

From what I can see, some of the patches that exploit the new FX waveforms are actually designed to actually have different sounds on each end of the keyboard, so that you recreate the more natural nuances of the original instrument. e.g. like some slides that can be played with the right hand. I can't be 100% sure what is really happening of couse without an FX.

Now I am not so sure that these Fantom-X piano patches can be made much better using the Fantom-S piano waveforms. After doing a little investigating it appears that the main problem lies in the Fantom-S’s acoustic piano waveforms. Never before had I thought that the acoustic piano waveforms in the F-S were less than great until now. For some reason when listening to these F-X piano patches on the F-S I now notice that the acoustic piano waveforms in the Fantom-S are a little off.
Here is something kind of neat but subjective to ones taste. I have found a pretty good sounding piano patch that only uses one tone. Use the piano patch “Piano+SftPad” found in the XV patch library and turn off tones 2 and 3 and just leave tone 1. To me it sounds pretty good especially considering that it only is using one tone.

can you use the sampler to sample those waveforms?and then put them together in a initiated patch, or would this take up too much memory, and too much time???i mean 700 samples in one patch is alot of samples, isn't it?? just wondering..

A question for Lawrence

Post by Karmafied »

Hi my friend, many thanks for all the support for the Fantom S owners youre really great man.

I have 3 especific questions about the sounds in the Fantom X convertion.

1.-The sounds in preset F 085 Lars/Aft and the 089 GTR HEROES use a new waveform or use the same that i have in Fanton S.

2.-The new strings sounds in bank G 019 to 033 use new waveform ore some of this sounds use the original waves in S version??

3.-And finally the HARDS LEADS from the banks 066 to 088 use new waveforms or use the s waves ??

many thanks for the help, this anwers are really important for me ´cause for my type of music i need some great strings, great leads and some guitarlike sounds. Thanks again my friend.

1.
085 - FS waves
089 - FS waves (I assume - if not, then the FX waves it is pointing to are synth waves. Whereas it loads in the FS with guitar waves, which makes more sense)

2. These mainly use new FX waves

3. a mixture - many of them use just FS waves. Several of them combine new FX and old FS waves.

The best way is to download the unedited versions. Send them to the FS and you can usually very quickly tell where the wrong waveforms are being loaded (i.e. it is looking for a new FX one), as the sounds rarely fall into the same category. i.e. it it supposed to load a string sound, but loads an organ. Things like that.
