Possible to select FanX Performances from another keyboard?

Post by DanS »

Hi all, been awhile since I've posted here.

Just picked up a new Yamaha S70XS, and want to use it's Master mode to select Performances on my Fantom X7. Is this possible via MSB/LSB?
I see in the Roland docs how to do it for Patches, but not for Performances.
Thanks.

Look in the sound list book. It gives programme change numbers for all Patches and Performances.

That just lists the actual patch numbers, not the MSB/LSB info.
However, I found the stuff I was looking for on an old addendum I d/l'ed from the Roland site a few years ago.

Hi Dan,

You're right, my mistake. I think they're there because I wrote them in my printed copy by hand!

I knew I'd seen them somewhere recently: they appear on the Performance List Screen along with the Prgram Change numbers. Press [LAYER/SPLIT] or [MIXER] then press [F5 (Perf List)].

Cheers

Thanks Andy.
However, even armed with this info, the Yammie and the FantomX aren't playing well together yet!!

Have you got all the necessary "Receive" tags switched on on the Fantom? Menu> MIDI tab?

Yeah, it was suggested to have the Fantom on 2, & I put my PolyEvolver on 3, and this is how it is, but it just isn't happening at the moment.

I believe by default the 'Performance Control Channel' (that's how I think it's called) is set to MIDI channel 16. To select a Performance you must transmit program change and possibly Bank Select events to that MIDI channel. If you send to another channel you will only change the selected patch for the parts (of the current Performance) that happen to be set to the MIDI channel you're sending the bank select/program change on.

I think you can set this Performance Control Channel under the System menu. I'm not near my Fantom right now and too lazy to look up the exact name but I'm pretty sure it's what I wrote.

I can send you the exact things to send as I have built a patch change module with pedals for my fantom XR. You need to send a sysex command to switch to performance mode and then different things to change the performance number (and even go through preset, user and card performances)

Let me know if you want the info.

Thanks Arjan, you are most correct!
It is channel 16 for the Performances.

Phil,
I have built a patch change module with pedals for my fantom XR

Would you mind telling me a bit more about that? I've been looking at something similar: a box to implement seamless switching by turning parts on and off through SysEx. Something with a nice and simple hardware user interface that will make it easier to setup those SysEx sequences for various combinations on-the-fly.

I've been looking at using the MidiBox stuff (
http://forum.midibox.org/ ) but I'm wondering what you used to build your box.

Phil,

“I have built a patch change module with pedals for my fantom XR”

I'm interested too, specially because you refer pedals ;-)

Hi guys,

I actually built a module that adds different features to my midi rig (which is actually two m-audio midi controllers, a Motu midi processor, a Yamaha TG-55, A Korg 05/RW and a Fantom XR)

So my box is based on a Microchip Pic 18f4520, and has a patch change pedal input, an expression pedal input, a ribbon controler input and a midi out with buttons and a 4x20 LCD.

So I can now have my box send midi messages as I change the expression pedal or as my finger moves on my custom built ribbon controller. I also have Behringer pedal board with 4 momentary pedals to control my patches. So Bank Down, Bank Up, Patch Down, Patch up.

So now, depending on the rack synth I want to control (I tell my box which synth I want to control which automatically switches the motu processor to the right settings for routing by sending sysex commands), the Bank pedals send the correct midi messages for switching banks on the synth I'm using and the patch pedals sends the correct midi messages to change the patch number.

In the case of the XR, I programmed the code so the bank pedals go from PTCHUSER -> PTCHPRSTA -> PTCHPRSTB...PTCHPRSTI->PTCHCARD->PERFUSER->PERFPRST->PERFCARD and back to the beginning.

Patches pedals will make the patches go from 1 to (number of patches in the bank)

So the code of my box is customized to my setup.

I will also programm when I have time a menu when you can store a patch set for a song.
Like:
song 01 Patch List
FANTOM XR PATCHUSER 1
TG-55 BANK I PATCH 36
FANTOM XR PERFCARD25
FANTOM XR PATCHPRSTA 36
KORG BANKA PATCH 18
... etc

So each time you'll press the Patch UP pedal, it'll send the command to my motu processor to route the midi to the correct synth and then send the patch change info. Perfect for live playing! Even if I'm never playing live I still want to do it for fun.

So this is pretty much it. I had a real fun building it and now I don't need to play with the tiny buttons of my rack synths when I play and I can select the desired patch with my pedals!

I created the circuit board, soldered the chips and programmed the pic chip myself and put all of this in a nice black plastic box. I can put a picture of it here if you guys want!

By the way I'm an electronics engineer so this was like doing my day to day work for me!

So let me know if you want more info. I won't sell it and I don't have time to build another one by the way! I can just give you tips on how to make yourself one if you are willing to spend the time doing it.

Phil
