VC-2 and GT vocal designer
Hello there,
I was wondering if anyone who has had a chance to use both the V-synth GT and the VC-2 could please try to answer this for me:-
I have had a little time to look at both and it seems that each offers something that the other doesn’t. The VC-2 has 12 algorithms (including three different “Vocoder” algorithms) whilst the GT has just the one – Vocoder – but has an unlimited choice of carriers and, of course, the possibity of using the COSMs and the arpeggiator etc etc.
So there’s no doubt that the GT offers stuff the the VC-2 doesn’t. But it LOOKS – on the face of it, at least – as if the VC-2 offers stuff that the GT doesn’t. But perhaps the same tricks are available but with a different name, or with a bit more lateral thinking applied…
So – does the VC-2 do any tricks that the GT can’t do?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

In the VC-2, algorithms basically change what type of carrier waveform you're using. In the GT, you use the whole V-Synth engine as vocoder carrier, so it's not 12 algorithms but 12 million.

Hello Artimey - thanks for that. A different universe then! More formant types on the VC-2 though...(Fifteen on the VC-2, five on the GT, I think.)
And then there are the algorithms which uses a sample held in memory as the modulator. (Kbd Vocal etc.). Handy for live use, perhaps.
Any thoughts?
Cheers.

Agh yes, the formant types... but in the GT you can make up for that by using a COSM filter with vocal-like characteristics, like the dual TVF. You still have more flexibility. As of vocoder freeze, I didn't know the VC-2 has this :-/

Re: VC-2 and GT vocal designer
Hello again - I'm not quite sure what you mean by "Vocoder Freeze". What I was talking about was the possibility of loading a sample into the internal memory and then using it in the same way as you would if you looped a section of audio in a DAW and plugged it into the microphone input. Quite a handy feature, I find. Obviously it COULD be done another way, but I quite like to have it there.
I quite agree that the GT has so much scope that you're never going to be stuck for creative possibilities and I'm sure that, as you say, it is possible to use the GT's enhanced capabilities to cover some options which have gone. But I was interested to find out if getting rid of the VC-2 and relying on the GT would cause moments of frustration as a known procedure turned into a new "voyage of discovery"! Nothing wrong with that, of course, but not so good if you're in a hurry to get something done.
Cheers.

Agh yes, sure you can do this on the GT, only much better than on the VC-2. Sorry I got you wrong, for some reason I thought about doing a realtime freeze on the vocoder with what goes in from the mike. You can freeze a sample you vocode against, though, but only on the GT and it's 100% insane

That sounds very intriguing. (The freeze thing).
I'm still confused about how to get a modulator WITHOUT using the microphone input in some way?? I need AT LEAST one more life to get my head round the GT. Phew!!

I use a nice trick: have two tones on the GT's patches, set one to vocoder mode, and route second one to "direct" output. Then you take a jack cable and connect the direct output to the line input. Voila! One tone works as a carrier and another as modulator.

Hello again!
The clan disappeared for a while there, didn't it? Anyway - glad to see it back. I've tried that for a bit - does the job thanks. All good fun.
My quest to find out what, if anything, the VC-2 does that the GT can't continues...
Why oh why oh why did they not include the VC-1 in the GT? Grrrr.

We were offline due to server upgrades for about 10-12 hours a couple days ago, but otherwise all was working normally.

Ahh...that would be it. Time flies. Really makes you appreciate things when they suddenly aren't there!
A fantastic resource and I offer my respect for it's creation and maintenance..

Thank you very much for the kind words, Donna! Being the creator of the Clan, it's such a great honour to hear such praise from the people I made this place for.
