Baba O"Riley
Baba O"Riley
I'm trying to figure out how to set up my G8 to create the intro loop for the Who's Baba O'Riley (teenage wasteland). I have figured out the notes and while using a looping arpeggio I come pretty close but it's not fast enough. Any suggestions on set-up?

Hi Davi2,
welcome to the forum!
Well, are you using the arpeggio-function of the fantom (with a predefined arpeggio) or did you step in the sequence as a phrase (I know, it's a long Intro, you would have to step in many notes)?

I used the arpeggio function, played the notes, and hit the loop button.

Re: Baba O"Riley
Which arpeggio are you using and on what tempo?
Re: Baba O"Riley
Hi Pierre,
Sorry for the delay in replying. Had to go home and check the settings. (Yes, I'm doing this at work.
First, thanks for the welcome - this is my first forum. I have had my G* for only 3 weeks, so some of this is still pretty new.
To your questions, I was using the normal arpeggio that just replays the cord, single notes at a time, on the "up" format. I've got the tempo better now, at 100. I still can't figure out the sound though. I've been using a Hammond 1 or 2 and drawbar2's and 3's. I would like to increase the phase shifter more than it seems I can by the settings. But there are so many settings, I'm sure I'm missing something.
Also, I have a program that will play a CD and slow it down, while maintaing pitch, so one can figure out what notes are being played. So on the Baba O'Riley, what sounds like one note being hit is really two, phase shifted. The notes are FCF, but they play it like FFCCFF then repeats. Is there a way to program the G8 to double hit the notes? And not have to be bound by the choices in the machine? I may just have to play it myself, but using the apeggiator is much more accurate than I could ever play it.

Re: Baba O"Riley
I do this song as a song, or sequence, but this might help anyway. The basic notes are F,F, CDCD F,F, C,C (Repeat). Now the first 2 F's are 8th notes, the CDCD are 16th notes, and then the High F,F, and the C,C, (coming back down), are back to 8th notes again. Sped up, the CDCD becomes that sort of trill sound. This is the basic sequence, with a few variations of the trill, but for live, it works great.
Hope this helps. Back in the old days, I used a delay that made each note I played echo just one time. Thank God for sequencers!

Hi Davi2,
the trick with the delay (echo) was my very first thought too. But as firstlovedan noted, the deal with the song / phrase is much better for mainly one reason: when using delay to double the notes, you always have to take care about the tempo sync between arpeggio-speed and delay-time.
The other way, to produce this sequence with phrases seems to be easier. I'm writing this message at work, too (I have a break now
, so I can only give a coarse HowTo out of my mind.
* press the song-button left of the display, select a new empty song from your song list (press F1 ?) and load this one
* drill down the tempo to - don't know - maybe 30 bps, slow enough to play a part of the sequence manually
* press the record-button and setup the quantizing in the record-dialog to "grid" and "1/16th"
* press start (F8 or play-button) and record the first part of the sequence , played 1 time, exactly as firstlovedan noted, after the last note press the stop-button. (this is only on little part of the whole original sequence)
* now you should see the recorded phrase in the song-sheet
* check / edit the phrase by pressing F8 (song-edit), select the phrase by using the cursor-keys, and then the button for phrase edit, you'll see the phrase on your screen.
* edit it so that it meet your needs (please refer to the manual, it's described there in a good way. You may also refer to Dan Krisher's video concerning this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGPsa_3q ... annel_page)
* if the phrase is quite good, don't forget to save it.
* now go back to the song and edit it accordingly by copying the phrase as often as you need it to be played.
* you can now record and afterwards insert other phrases which play the other parts of the original sequence.
* if you have recorded all necessary phrases, you can either chain them in the song, that you will play in your performance OR (and that's my favourite) you can use the fantom's RPS-function to allocate each of the recorded phrases to a pad-button (pad mode: RPS) and store this pad-mode with the correct tempo in a live-setting. By using this way, you can interactively recall each phrase as often and as long as you want and you can chain the phrases individually. I use this myself for a song we play on stage.
Maybe I gave you some hints that you can follow. The catchwords are phrases and rps. You also should have a look at

You could copy one of the tones in the patch, then change it so that it triggers on Note Off, that way pressing and releasing a key will make it sound twice. Just a thought.
