Songs dropping phrases
Songs dropping phrases
On several occasions the Fantom G has "lost" phrases from within a song. I hadn't made any changes at all to the song.
Has anyone else had this issue. It's very frustrating.

Re: Songs dropping phrases
Is it maybe that you made changes directly to the phrases? Editing a phrase can affect a song containing that phrase. Also, if a phrase is contained in two or more songs and you edit the phrase, all songs will be affected. The solution is to make duplicates of phrases you want to use in more than one songs. This way you can make sure each instance of the phrase is edited separately.
Re: Songs dropping phrases
Yes, as cyclops said, if you are sharing phrases among songs any change to the phrase will affect all song containing that phrase. So, if you delete a phrase, that will disappear from all songs, regardless of what the current song is loaded.
Re: Songs dropping phrases
The Fantom-G's sequencer concept is based upon the phrase library. Once a phrase is recorded inside a song, instantly it becomes available for all songs and all FG's areas that use phrases: RPS sets, Rhythm patterns, Arp Styles and so on. So if you go into the phrase list and delete a certain phrase, all elements that use this phrase, be it a song or anything else, will lose this certain phrase. That's why we should use the duplicate function. And that's why we need more phrase slots, there maybe times that 2000 slots will just not be enough.
Re: Songs dropping phrases
Thanks for the recommendations.
I don't think the problem I'm facing is related to reuse of a phrase, though. This has happened to me on several different occasions. The first time or two I thought that maybe I'd done something incorrectly, but I don't think so now.
The most recent incident went something like this:
I powered up the G, loaded my project, and loaded the song. I connected the G to my laptop via USB and recorded the song into Sonar. I noticed in my Sonar project that a certain part was missing. I checked out the song on the G and the phrase was no longer inserted into the song. I went to the Phrase List so that I could find and re-insert the phrase, and it's not there. The whole phrase is missing.
If this had only happened once or twice I'd assume I had accidentally deleted the phrase or something. But I KNOW I didn't delete anything or edit anything last night.
Thanks again for your comments. I'm just wondering if anyone else has observed this problem?

Re: Songs dropping phrases
sdmsec, maybe you didn't save before turning your G off? You don't need to delete phrases for them to vanish... all you have to do is forget to save them before turning the power off.
Re: Songs dropping phrases
Yeah, jessej is absolutely right. Once you record or edit phrases, it's a good idea to go to the phrase list and perform a "Save all" command for your phrases.

Re: Songs dropping phrases
Menu > Shut Down FG Safely
That could be a good idea for a future update feature? A routine that checks that everything is saved, and if not, prompts for user interaction.
Also I would love to see a timed 'sleep mode' where the USB audio I/O ("soundcard") would still work, but all the LEDs and the TFT would turn off in order to save power.

Re: Songs dropping phrases
I wouldn't mind LEDs going on working, but a total black screensaver would be fine.
Re: Songs dropping phrases

may i ask, if you are using a usb stick bigger than 2gb?

Re: Songs dropping phrases
My USB stick is 4MB. (or is that 4GB???)
I'm at work right now, so I don't remember which brand I'm using.

Re: Songs dropping phrases
->i think it's about 4 gb.
perhaps you should try a stick with max of 2 gb.
somtimes fan g has these problems with samples, phrases etc. when working over 2gb.

Re: Songs dropping phrases
dan lor, I use a Sony MicroVault 8GB USB stick and had no problems at all so far. It's not the capacity, but the brand that makes the difference. Anyone that encounters problems with their USB sticks can visit this thread and see which ones are tested from Clan members for full compatibility with the Fantom-G.

Re: Songs dropping phrases
Thank you all for your help.
When I get home I'll check my USB drive against the recommended list.
I'll probably just go buy a 2GB drive from the recommended list just to be sure.
The odd thing is that the problem is so hit-or-miss.
Anyhow, I'll just save myself some trouble and buy a recommended USB.

Re: Songs dropping phrases
@cyclops: thanks for your information.
->you are totally right that SOME 8GB sticks(and above) work with fan g, but not everyone.
and btw: i can read, too.
the problem depends on the controller chip of the stick, no matter from which manufacturer.
best,
dan
