128 MIDI Tracks or 16 MIDI Tracks

Post by shedbd »

Hello Everybody,
I bought my FG8 last week. So I am not quite used it yet.
I have 2 questions-
1) How can I record Midi track no 17- 128? When I try to record in those tracks, It goes to track no 1-16.What i am doing wrong?
2) What is the difference between PART and TRACKS in FG?
Please help.

There are 16 midi channels but 128 tracks.

A track can be any midi number from 1-16.

Quick example.
Track 1 has a bass drum
Track 2 has a snare drum
Track 3 has HiHats
Track 4 Has Cymbals
etc etc
All these tracks would be on midi channel 10 but they all have their own tracks for easy editing.

You can still have more than 16 sounds but it would mean programming a patch change on that midi channel when you need it.

no.. ok let me start again.

You can only have 16 midi channels (sounds) at once. This is The parts you see in studio mode numberd 1-16. You can change these sounds during the song using patch changes but still can only have 16 sounds at once.

The 128 tracks you are seeing you can use them all but you still can only use 16 sounds at once.. So lets say you had part1 as piano.. you could play that part onto track 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 for example and you would have 7 tracks all playing that piano part. Then you could have track 8,9,10,11,12,13 etc doing different drum parts but they would all be using part 10 drums. Then you can have brass on part 3 porgrammed onto 14,15,16,17,18 etc

so on so on.

Does this make sense?

I've noticed that after pushing record, I then have to scroll down to the track desired.

For example...Choosing Drum Channel 10. Try to record another drum take on track 11...Press record, it jumps to 10 and then scroll to 11 and start recording...

I hope this helps.

shedbd,

You can think of it this way...

You have 16 instruments in Fantom G (16 Internal Parts. Each part on 1 MIDI Channel)
You can hire 16 more instruments from MIDI out. (16 External Parts. Each part on 1 MIDI Channel)
You also get an instrument with ARX board ( 2 max, 1 for each ARX)

And you have this recording machine in Fantom G called sequencer which can record MIDI performance from these 34 instruments (16 internal, and 16 hired ones) on 128 different tracks.

You also get 24 Audio tracks. Audio Tracks and MIDI Tracks are different in the way you can edit them.
For simplicity, Fantom-G records Part 1 to Track 1, Part 2 to Track 2.... etc., but you can reocrd any part to any track.

So this way you can record a performance from a instrument 1 (part 1) on track 1 for 4 bars. The you try another take from the same instrument (part 1) and reocord that on track 20, so that later you could decide which one to use. Now, here we have two tracks, but one instrument.

So, to summarize: There are 128 MIDI Tracks, and 34 MIDI PARTS (16 internal, 16 External, 2 ARX).

In system settings (I think it's in "startup"), you need to switch track auto-selection off (it always sets the track number to the same as studio mode part number).
