It it wise to leave the fantom on all day?

I've had mine on for more than 6 months at a time... even when I don't use it it's on... If I add up all the time It's been on since I bought it in 04, it's probably been turned on for three years total...

It's in perfect shape as if i bought it yesterday... Screen still perfect and bright...

I leave mine on all the time, the only thing is if you want to do this get a APC.
You want to protect it from power surges as well as power outages.

wow I would have never known that was the norm for some people. I guess that makes it way easier to deal with the loading speed. I could have used a lot more memory card space before buying more. Im on my 9th CF card.

That is very unwise, because you're wasting the energy. In addition, you are not letting the processors cool down, which makes them work slower. And your gear will wear out much sooner, especially the LCD.

A very worrying thought. I suppose that's the risk in buying used gear. The owner may have left the poor thing on for 6 months. I certainly wouldnt want one of those.

i have several homies who drop tracks and most of them leave their gear on all the time

I think that constant switching gear on and off will weare out equipment faster than leaving it ON. And when inspiration strikes everything is just a keypress away. Bootup time = inspiration killer.

My Fantom X7 is on 24/7, as well as the rest of my studio rack gear. The electricity use issue notwithstanding, there is always the argument of constant heat vs thermal cycling for gear longevity. That is, some believe the constant power surge start-up and heating/cooling cycles from repeated on/off use is actually worse for electronics than starting it once, and leaving it running in a properly ventilated area. I've seen this successfully argued both ways and don't want to start another one here. All I will say is this--no one has ever quantitatively proven that leaving electronic gear on 24/7 shortens its useful life any more than repeated on/off cycles.

The convenience factor far outweighs any others for me.

I could never leave my gear on all the time for a variety of reasons ... I actually enjoy the process of removing the dust covers, turning them on, etc ... and then "putting everything to bed" when I'm done.

I think the "leave on always" approach — as far as longevity goes — perhaps may be more valid with vintage analog gear ...

That said, I don't leave my JP-6 or Juno-60 always on either ... However, I will often leave those on if I'm taking a break for a few hours ... but I will generally turn the Fantom off ... Unless I'm working on an internal project and don't want to risk losing something in the haste to turn off ...

(I don't like the room starts to feel after a while when lots of gear has been on ... kind of warm with a sort of electric film over everything ... )

Personally, I think it's a waste of electricity and a little irresponsible considering what people are talking about regarding climate change ...

I guess that's why they call it a "free world." ... But think of these guys ...
