For everyone!

Post by JG »

Hi,

This may be off topic and Art will have to help me if this needs to be moved to another forum, but hopefully it can stay and maybe become a sticky.

I've been here a few times every day since I got my G8 in late april. I must say that it's a great place filled with great people. Helpful, extremely gifted (both musically and technically) and rather humorous (perhaps not everyone, but still...). Now, I'm not here to get new friends (I leave that to Facebook and others) but I think it would be interesting to get to know you guys a bit more when it comes to the musical side of you. We've got at least one thing in common so far... Why did you start playing? Any particular album that sort of set you off in the right direction? Any artistis you are influenced by?

Who knows? You might find your next musical soulmate in here!

Good or bad idea?

The idea is good, but I don't think the Fantom G section is the proper home for this topic. It probably belongs in 'Community Talk' or perhaps 'Free Zone'. I'll let Artemiy make the call on this.

This will be for the Free Zone, but...

I started writing songs after feeling compelled by God to write Gospel music.
A couple of my best tunes to this day were written on that very day back in about 1989.

Currently I am taking a break from writing and learning as much Keith Green music on Piano as I can.

Very challenging keyboard work and amazingly inspiring Lyrics. Bob Dylan was a buddy of his back then around 1978 and contributed Harmonica on one of his tunes. I do play a couple of Dylans tunes from his "Slow Train Coming Album" also from about that same period...Great Keyboard gospel stuff on that album too.

Anyway...I've written Jazz and Rock and other things since, but my heart is with the Gospel stuff.

By the way the Fantom G is the Ultimate Church/Worship Keyboard because of the Live Mode!

I am currently what you can call "musical prostitute"... which means I'll sell my soul/musical skills to whom ever pays for them :)

My source of inspiration is mostly progressive music (Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, ...) but I try to absorb/play all the good music I can...
Currently I am on 3 projects, in one I get (well) payed and in the others it's mostly for pleasure ;)
I'm currently in a "Pink Floyd Tribute" and a general purpose cover band.

I try my best to be as flexible as I can...
I've written music and have the opportunity to play it, but I've got a problem, I'm not much of a poet :(
So I am always depending on someone else writing for me to create... (besides instrumental work)

Regards,
LL

Well, I started it, so I might as well contribute!

I'm currently taking a university class in Songwriting. I'm 39 and I've been playing the piano since I was about 5. When my elder brother brought home David Foster's self-titled album in 1986 I was blown away. Ever since that day I have admired most of his work and he is a big inspiration to me. I listen carefully to his productions and arrangements and try to learn from it.

On the album just mentioned I saw for the first time an artist who had the good taste to print out all of his equipment, something I think should be a must! (Gear freak as I am...). I then got the Juno-106 and later on the JX-8P and the rest is history. Apart from Foster I also listen to Sinatra of the 50's, when Nelson Riddle was his main arranger. Great stuff!

In my early years, I have been mostly into 1960's and early 1970's music, starting from ABBA and Shocking Blue to The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones later on. As my father was involved in musical instruments, I was pretty interested in learning how to play, and synths attracted me with the fact that you could have such a large variety of sounds in one small device, and even compose your own little songs in there.

It took a lot of years (around 10 years to be precise) to get it from a hobby to a profession, but the good thing is I never feel it as my "job". Just as how Confucius said it: find yourself a thing you love to do, and you'll never have to work again ;-)
