Same issue

Post by terencemunro »

I have the same issue too. After playing 30min or so it starts to distorting every sound. after reboot it fine again.

So i guess its a software Problem because if it was a hardwareproblem it could not be fixed with a restart of the keyboard.

I think it can be some kind of construction issue. Some cirquits are wrong.

Just remembered I had a similar problem with another Roland keyboard when connected to the stage box (multicore cable) directly without a D.I. box.
Connecting the keyboard outputs directly to a 30mt cable is not a good idea it can even damage the output...

Did you ever get word from Roland what might have caused the distorted sound in the first place? What did they have to do to fix it? Was it a hardware issue alone, or was it somehow connected to the software?

Knowing where the problem was rooted or stemmed from might help other Fantom G owners to avoid such a scenario; >> if the problem was actually caused by User mis-appropriation somehow, that is. ;) If it was a "hardware only" issue, then Roland needs to try and stay on top of these assembly line quality control quirks. Others have also had the same 'distorted' sound issue with their FG's too, so it was more than just a 'single' isolated case. Quality control has to be maintained to the highest level or it will start to affect Roland's bottom line in a negative way, in my opinion. Overall they have done a good job at keeping problems to a minimum though.

Glad you got it fixed. :) Or rather, got a "new" G8 delivered! :) I wonder what they did with the defective one?? :| Recycled it perhaps? :|

Initially I took it in to a certified Roland repair shop locally in southeast us... they diagnosed it as being a hardware defect and a replacement part would be needed. They were unable to procure the proper part and i was advised to send it directly back to Roland US by a trusted source. I believe RolandUS would have also identified it as a possible hardware issue... but on the return trip back to RolandUS for repair, UPS seriously damaged the original G8 in shipping so Roland US graciously replaced the G8. Therefore it is impossible to say exactly what caused the problem to begin with. I was just glad Roland US resolved the matter with the quickest outcome and I am very happy with the Fantom G. It is an amazing piece of workstation! j

I resampled some MIDI phrase tracks as audio today. All the tracks were distorted. I deleted the tracks and repeated the resampling process. Everything seems to work fine now.

seems like the jacks are messed up where the ground
shorts out after playing some time.

i tried several senarios over the past few days but
it eventually all failed. but the DP8 pedal seems to be
partially connected to the problem as my yamaha pedal
had less occurance. when i use the line outs the problem
creeped back.

im using regulated 120v power line (UPS backed up), tried
several cords on the 1(L), 2(R) outputs including regular
unbalanced 1/4" plugs, various plugs i had including
mogami balanced TRS cables. all failed eventually. :(

my store was nice to order a replacement G8 for me with
a more recent serial number. (bad one was ZW8xxxx,
new one is ZXxxxxx). it's been running for the last 3hrs
with no issue.... but it's scary cause i think it's going to
happen again... lol i took a vid on my BlackBerry so i
have proof of what this crazy distorted outburts are like.

i hope my ordeal is over.
