Hey guys,
I play live for two indian bands on north indian/pakistani/south indian music.
How are you switching patches? I'm using favorites but i know its not the best way to do it because I'm swapping back and forth between favorites and keep changing the list. With the triton LE, I used to have 10's hold on and switch back and forth easily using that. Brilliant device. Unfortunately not present on the fantom S.
I'm planning on using the 16 pads for patch changes...what do you guys think? Also what patches do you use?
Some songs, to give you an idea : Pehla nasha, bahome chaliya, chand sifarish, punjabi no.1, beegay hont tera, etc.

Hey Sam ....
Have you thought about making a strategy for your songs, creating performances with those patches in there and using RPS to map out the different scenes. You can use a combination of multiple splits and changing scenes to do this.
This way you can achieve nicely layered strings and other instruments as well.
For example Pehla Nasha has quite a bit of piano, along with strings and sax. You can make your splits such that you do the least amount of changes.
You could also have the Dbeam controlling a very quick change, if Ur right hand is busy
.
Sometimes I wish the favourites buttons were programmable for RPS as well .. now that would be cool, wouldnt it?
Remember, I dont play the keys live, (so any of my suggestions should be taken with a pinch/handful?? of salt
), but if I were to play something live, this is what I would do.
Manish

Only way is to keep them on favorites... I tried to use pads.. cant get them in patch mode.. works in seq. mode loosing all effects... sounding dull
Korg has some flexibility than Roland in this..
Bottom line.. try to save in favorites and can use up to 8 patches at a time..

manish, that's an excellent suggestion. The only problem is that, since you're doing performances for each song, you'll have to remember which pad corresponds to what patch if you're switching through patches. Or you'll have to use arrow keys to change patches. Its a bit of a cumbersome approach, but it'll work nicely.
venkiee, use the RPS mode in conjunction with PATCH mode. i.e. channel 1 in the sequencer corresponds to the PATCH and channel 10 in the sequencer corresponds to PADs. Try having the RPS enabled but switch to PATCH mode. It should keep the effects in patch mode.
Infact i'll try it when i get back home and let you guys know.
Something else I forgot to mention is that I also use the fusion live. I'll have to take that into consideration too.

I dont use performances ...
... I use Songs instead ... That way all my sounds are in a single song, along with my sysex patterns, percussion and anything I sequence. I reserve patterns 1...20 for my sysex stuff, and the remaining stuff can be RPS MIDI tracks. And BTW, you have 3 effects units at yr disposal in song mode, so you can do some fancy stuff when required.
I have not had to switch songs yet
... But I think it'll work for live ... I mean I do play things in realtime when I test out my percussion tracks ...
Including the changes in patches layers ... I like the way Jordan rudess does his stuff live ... He's a big inspiration ...
Only time consuming thing here is to work out the strategy for each song and program the layer/split switching up-front, and then it's a cinch to play live. It's well worth it, and you can achieve much more than using patch mode and switching till ur blue in the face
.
Remember, I said strategy, because there are some songs when U don't need so much switching ... In which case U can go back to using plain old patch or live set mode (performance/layers).
But imagine if Ur doing something like piya tu ab to aaja or duniya mein (old RDB stuff, complex arrangements) .... U'll need splits etc to do everything in real-time
.
Also, most of the songs I help with live, I'm sequencing parts of the percussion along with a dholak/tabla/octapad player, it has served me well till now, and I can step in and play pieces that our keys player needs help with.
I am now considering using my guitar-MIDI converter to trigger patterns in real time when required, so that I don't really have to take my hands off the guitar to switch patterns in Real-time.
Hope this helps
