When i delete a note it deletes it on every phrase???

Post by superchris »

Ok, so when im arranging my phrases into a song, I like to drop certain instruments out at certain times. With the G, when i do this it deletes it on every copied phrase???? I dont want it to do that. Lets say i copy phrase 200,(4 bar phrase) four times. Thats 16 bars..ok...ok. Then i want to delete notes for a breakdown at bar 4 , it deletes it on every copied phrase. Maybe im an idiot but is this shit fruity loops or what, wtf. Is there any work around for this besides making a whole new phrase!!!! I hate that phrase crap. PLEAse help i need to do this to make real songs, not just loops copied out.

First of all... relax!

Welcome to Phrase based sequencer.

When you copy phrase on a track, you are only copying the link to phrase. Which is very good! Think about it for a second.

Let's say you have a phrase repeated 10 times in a song at different places. Now you realized that you have to tweak something in the phrase. You just have to change the phrase once, and all other 9 copies will be automatically updated, because they are using the same phrase.

On the other hand, if you want to delete note only on one phrase, you have to make a new phrase.

ok so shakil or whatever ...

isnt your reply just a "rationalized workaround"? i mean, that's great and all, and that's how the fantom G operates (now, unfortunately) but linear based sequencing is my workflow and it was on the older fantoms ... it is in logic -- in fact, most of the professional world makes music in a linear based fashion without the limitations of global phrasing.

superchris is right -- this is yet another lame "oversight" in the fantom g's development.

i can think of VERY FEW circumstances where id want to change a 4 bar phrase all the way through the track. and really, if i wanted to do that, i would make the changes (on ONE of the phrases), and copy/replace on the rest of the track. why, all of a sudden, are we FORCED to do that as if it's a normal, everyday application?

people do edits WAY MORE than they make a global phrase change... and they arent mutually exclusive.

again, a huge oversight and obvious lack of testing/musicianship in house at roland.

bunch of tech geeks makin something for musicians...

Hi Superchris.

You can actually copy the phrase and assign it a new phrase name, then make the appropriate changes.

Cheers!

Wow shakil, all you did is repeat what i said. I asked if there were any other way than making a new phrase. And you replied with saying you have to make a new phrase????LOL
I also said that when i change one phrase it changes them all. And yhou repeated this to me as well LOL. PLease dont respond to me like im newb......cuz you just made yourself sound like one. By the way i know its a pattern based seq..... ive used them before.........

superchris , go to Phrase List, find your phrase there and you can duplicate and insert it back where you want.

Umm . . . just to clarify . . . RTFM stands for 'Read the friendly manual.' I always think there should be a 'P' at the beginning. PRTFM = Please read the friendly manual. We all know that Roland is known for their friendly manuals!

I think Roland should make it work like this:

While in Song Edit

F3 - Copy
Shift+F3 - Duplicate

Press Shift and the whole Function bar changes and F3 turns into Duplicate. The [?] bar already changes when you press shift, but I think the whole F-bar should do the same, we'd get 16 functions instead of 8... dead easy.

Same shift-thing could be implemented all over the G and save a lot of time for the users...

It's very easy to assume from the way you worded the topic "When I delete a note it deletes in on every phrase???" , that you didn't know about the phrase sequencing.

So, I just reiterated that, there is no way of doing what you were trying to do without creating a new phrase (copying and duplicating).
