CASIO SK-1 vs FANTOM G

Post by kozlikha »

SK-1 got a better harpsichord than F.G. IMHO & sampler is just wicked. Hands up who had one? It was my main synth at school.

Oh what memories! I still have this keyboard, along with the book & sample cassette that came with it. It is still fun to hook it up and play around with! Just had to keep it for old time's sake! j

This was my first keyboard:

Yamaha PortaSound MK-100
YAMAHA MK-100 is one of the earliest workstation that integrates a synthesizer, a drum machine, a multi-part sequencer / arranger, an effect, 49-key mini-keyboards, two speakers, and a storage interface to cassette.
The synthesizer section uses 2 single-cycle PCM waveforms to generate sounds.
Pretty cool actually, it had some synth-like features (ability to mix two waveforms and select indepedent TVA envelopes for each). I still have it somewhere.

You know, funny thing is, the dreadful Roland S-10 was hardly anymore capable than that SK-1. Anybody remember this abomination? What were Roland smoking? I mean, who the hell used the QuickDisk format.

Best,

ahahah...
funny you mention the QD disks. Yes , I used those 8-). No, not on a S-10 but on a PR-100 sequencer - 1 song per disk side. Now imagine me swapping disks in a live show... :-D

I wanted an SK-1 SO BAD when I was a little kid. Imagine! Recording farts and then playing them back with a keyboard! WOW!!

Seriously. That stuff's gold to a kid living in the middle of South Dakota.

Back in those days we had some Yamaha & Casio & there were no drum loops or cheap studios around, so we used to sample a vocal drum beat into SK-1, & it was wicked. I tell you, some of my best tracks were written with minimum technology at hand

I had one!!!, it was the board that started me on my musical path. My cousin (R.I.P and he was so young (16) and a cool dude) gave it to me because it was broken but I fixed it . oooooOOO Good times.

Good to remember how and when it all started.

Thanks for the memory kozlikha :-)

Had one, too. Played with a chick singer in college and used it on "Two Of Hearts" by Stacy Q.
"I....I....I.....I.....I....I need.....I need you" I was a goof!

Indeed, this was my first keyboard. I was in the USMC in '88 at 29 Palms and didn't have a lot to do. I was inspired by the work of Mark Isham and others so I just had to have this. Within a year, I saved up for my Ensoniq VFX.

"along with the book & sample cassette that came with it"

Mine didn't come with a cassette! I did have one though, and it was my first sampler. Great keyboard. I eventually took it apart and shoved it in my closet. What a fool I was. I'd love to have one now. I see them quite a bit on Ebay. They are very popular with people who like to curcuit bend. A neat trick was to flick your thumbnail on one of the Mic grill corners. You would play it back as a simple click, but when you looped it, it sounded like a synthesizer. Great stuff...
