Sequencer no Copy and Paste!? Delete/Erase most basic functi

Post by Quinnx. »

Is`nt ironic that we has what "appears!" to be an advanced sequencer (all eye candy)
But we dont have Copy and paste?

Im not going to make any excuses for roland and the G being new
it just does not cut it.
The Sequencer is the heart of music making but yet we cannot do the most basic of functionality

copy measure 1 for 2 bar and past or repeat it
How!? is one suppose to achieve this?

this just kills! music making on the G

AND PULLEESE!! don all start jumping in with justifications for it
you will all just sound like idiots!
And dont tell me to go to phrase edit and copy every phrase for every track
this is just DUMB!

The best thing to do is Email support@roland.co.uk and tell them we want it..

This pathetic!
how can roland PR go all out telling people its the MOST ADVANCED SEQUNCER and it lacks the MOST BASIC FUNCTIONS!?

Wait a second, there is a "copy" soft button that copies the phrase. And there is a "copy" macro edit function in the phrase edit mode.

No
That copy copies an entire single phrase and places it at the end of the current track or phrase without a choice in the mater.

I speak of song copy like on the X
in song mode you go to edit screen and you can copy

Source measure (all channels/tracks)
dest
from x for x

This copies and entire section of song to where ever you like as many times as you like
Unless im blind i dont see any kind of song copy on the G?
how does one copy ALL tracks?
or duplicate a section of song or copy a section of song?

also DELETE!? or ERASE!?
How does one delete a section of song?
Like from a 100 bar song,
delete bars 40-43 All tracks/channels
bar 44 would now on bar 40,
same for
ERASE ??
just how privative is ROLANDs MOST ADVANCES SEQUENCER suppose to be!?

Considering the publication schedules of magazines, it would seem to me that Roland should act as swiftly as possible to provide functions that are already on the X.

While reviewers will certainly rave about the USB key storage, big screen, more MFX, and a larger sequencer and audiotracks, they will hit the G because it lacks multisampling and other features that are on the X.

If Roland is touting the G as their new flagship, such omissions will not go unnoticed by the cognoscenti of the music press. Roland has a golden opportunity with the G if they act quickly.

Having said that, there will ALWAYS be people who will diss one company or another, but a lot of people do read these product reviews before deciding to audition an instrument. Time will tell I suppose.

On a side note: I remember when Keyboard Magazine used to be a much larger magazine and was a great source of info. I ceased my subscription some time ago because I was already receiving EM, Billboard, plus three Magic periodicals. The other day I popped into Borders and picked up an issue of Keyboard. I was shocked. This magazine is so thin now and little more than an oversized pamphlet! What has happened to the Keyboard of old?

Quinnx, you may not have used DAW sequencers before.

Arrangement edit functions are done in the Song Edit screen—Copy and paste (insert) is done right there. It's insanely simple to do, and takes a small fraction of the time.

Now if you want to edit the data within the phrases themselves (or regions), then and only then do you enter phrase edit.

This is more in the vein of *proper* sequencers, like Logic, Cubase, ProTools, Digital Performer, Sonar, Ableton Live, and... the MV-8x00.

Yes, it's a different way of doing things, but dare I say the Fantom-X way of doing things is so antiquated and slow it's almost not worth doing at all.

For example, say you had a two-bar drum pattern at measure 9 and wanted to copy it three times.

On the Fantom-X:

1. Spend time figuring out the location and length of your desired region—be sure to keep these numbers in your head at all times during the process below
2. Press SONG EDIT
3. Press Track Edit
4. Press the pad corresponding to Copy
5. Press Select
6. Cursor to and change the Source Track parameter
7. Cursor to and change the Source Channel/Part parameter
8. Cursor to and change the Source Measure parameter—make sure you know where your measures start!
9. Cursor to and change the "for" parameter–make sure you know how long your loop is!
10. Cursor to and change the Destination Track parameter—make sure you know where you want to copy it!
11. Cursor to and change the Destination measure parameter
12. Cursor to and change the Copy Times parameter
13. Cursor to and change the Edit Mode parameter
14. Press F8 twice
15. Press EXIT to return to the Song Edit screen
16. Considering there was no realtime visual feedback of said edit, press PLAY to confirm you entered the right numbers. If not, try it all again

On the Fantom-G:

1. Press SONG twice
2. Select the region you'd like to copy
3. Press the F-key Copy button three times. Your edit will instantly be reflected on the screen

ALTERNATIVELY:

1. Press SONG twice
2. Click the desired region with the mouse to select it
3. Hold SHIFT and click the region three times. Your edit will instantly be reflected on the screen

AND PULLEESE!! don all start jumping in with justifications for it
you will all just sound like idiots!
Excuse me, but this idiot has to go complain on the Office:Word forums about how Microsoft removed the ability to write a letter with a rock and chisel.

Select the region you'd like to copy

Post by Quinnx. »

Sounds good if it really was that simple and worked that way but..
You cannot do simply as you suggest because you cannot select a region you can only select an entire phrase

What you have propose is Bull!
Your just doing what roland PR does all the time..
Over simplify something that is never simply as stated.

So you have propose no solution to the problem and its still exists

You still cannot copy, delete, erase whole sections of a song on the G
Nor can you copy data from any phrase to another or song to phrase.

Looks more and more like the X sequencer is the advanced one not the G

And yes I realize how to edit phrases (not regions)
this as stated still does not solve the problem no matter what approach to take to the G sequencer, it simply does not provide the correct functionality required for a MOST ADVANCED WORKSTATION ha ha.. X-)

Dont get me wrong..
yeah its got good sound
live feature is nice
single mode is what its suppose to be
Studio mode is all there
but the Sequencer!?????? FFS!! Roland get with the 21st Century.
Im seriously thinking of going back to the X (no joking)

Quinnx, GarageBand works in the same way, and it ROCKS. To copy a region of the phrase, you just duplicate that phrase and erase or delete the unneeded portion. And it does take less time than setting up the copy/erase/delete operations in the Fantom-X track edit menu. I know it may take time to get used to this concept, but it *does* represent a faster and easier workflow.

Does any of you know how to move a phrase from one track to another?

I only get horizontal copying, no vertical, and the mouse won't move a phrase down to the next track either...

Hi Jim,

It may have changed, but from the Song Edit menu, try holding SHIFT, and cursoring down. I seem to remember moving phrases that way.

Art:
You see we have kinda lost sight of what phrases are
originaly they are suppose to replace patterns

But if we look at them as independent blocks of 16 channels
they are actually independent songs just like on the fantom x

but then...
that means we don't really have patterns any more.
and if we say well.. just use other phrases as patterns
that dont work because you still have the problem that cannot pull data from one phrases to another or take 2 phrases that have independent bass and drums and combine the data into a separate phrase

maybe it will resolve itself soon
maybe roland will do something in the next firmware
its all feeling like every new roland gear makes yo work harder and harder to achieve what you need.

Same with the GT, i droped that because it functionality was less than the orignial V even though roland pr said
MOST ADVANCED SYNTH again...

GarageBand works in the same way
And yes Garage band probably does but
I bet you have realy mouse functionality including cut copy paste drag and drop etc.. mouse linked.. The G just has a mouse for show that aids very little using it.

any way..
peace..

Jim, Audacity:

Yes, if you hold down SHIFT you can move the phrase up/down into other tracks.

Yes, works perfectly, thanks Audacity and Art.
Should be possible with the mouse as well anyway ...

Okay I have battled enough with this sequencer..
not being able to copy data from one phrase to another is just way too restrictive! and stupid! not to be there from the beginning as it is on the X (patterns)

And if where going to be using many phrases on many tracks in the phrase editor,
Not! being able to also copy a section of SONG(all phrases) is
also stupid.

Im not willing to make any more excuses for roland with all the other sacrifices like multisampling, midi export, rps on keys, SRX cards, sound/song library collection on CF, beat calc, assign to pad/keyboard

The sequencer is just a step to far! for me.. (i cant make music!??)

ANYONE WANT TO BUY A G6? (im going back to my X)

Quinnx,
I'm a candidate ! As I said before (but no one took me seriously...I wonder why ;-)).
I have a Fantom Xa that does almost everything I need to make some music.

The G in turn will add what I miss to my setup, Like the widest Sound range and quality, the Live and Studio sets, the connectivity, the BIG Display, the touch sensitive PADs, the most advanced way to create songs, etc, etc.

Wanna trade ?
