Re: Roland G - When is it shipping?

Post by keysme »

I'm in the process of listening to the G demos right now and currently listening through the Guitar sounds. I'm not sure if gareth went through every preset guitar patch or not but here's my take of the ones I heard: I've heard better on keyboards but some of them were pretty decent and useable. I liked the AC piano on the first demo but noticed a little discrepancy in quality in the mid section but overall an improvement over the X for sure. I thought that Pipe Organ on the G was fabulous and a notch better than the one on the X too in my opinion. As I listen to the lead synth sounds I am disappointed somewhat. :( The B3 Organs need to be heard in greater depth and detail before I could ascertain their inherent worth and before determining if they are indeed better than what's already on the X with SRX. For what it's worth I didn't like the Banjo a whole lot. The EP's that I heard were pretty good though.

Here is my wish list if gareth or somebody else with a new G would like to try: Please record more acoustic sounds like Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Piano, etc. Organs seem to be a big favorite with many keyboardists so if someone could record some quality Organ/B3 demos from the G it would be greatly appreciated also.

PS: Supposedly the Fantom G now has a finished and 'stable' OS version installed on it by the fact that they are showing up in stores. I can see where Australia would get one of the first shipments because the Cargo ship leaving Tokyo harbor is heading east and Australia is a close and convenient early stop for it as it heads east toward America. :) And if my calculations are correct the Fantom G will be docking at L.A. Harbor around the 25th of April and in stores shortly thereafter. :) Patience my son, patience. Yes Lord. :)

Well Keysme. . . Lo and Behold! . . . The 'G' is here!
Something smells fishy if you ask me. If this is a joke it is by no means very funny.. :-(
No Joking! =)

Hmmm... I don;t know how to use quotes here...

"Is it possible that you are playing keys in a Genesis cover band and that you are bit faster than Tony Banks? :-)))"

Hahah I wish! I may be up there in speed but I don't have his co-ordination. Some of his leads he played while still playing such complex chords with the left hand blow my mind. I can't hide that i'm a big Genesis fan ;)

"Where G?
Gareth just for arguments sake between me and the Guitar Center salesman who insists the FG's have to stay in the warehouse until May 1st. Did you order the FG from a retail store? If so which one? I know you are in another country but I just wanted to let his hindparts know I knew he was bearing false witness! If not its no big deal, just wanted to make it possible for people in Nashville who want a G to have the opportunity to purchase one. Thanks "

I pre-ordered mine from a place called Billy Hyde's music in Australia. When I pick up my case on Monday, i'll have a chat with him and ask him all about it, though I suspect "keysme" is dead on with his hypothesis. Hope you're able to get your hands on one soon!

I'll make some more demos in the coming days.

Thanks Gareth. I hope those prices are not "American" dollars? If so, you should have gotten your G8 the day after NAMM! Haha (I made a funny). Nice selection of some rare gear though. Do you live anywhere near SAE? I was thinking about going to school there to further my education as I completed the "first part" in Nashville.

I'm laughing because dollars to donuts these guys have most likely brought forward at least a few raw waves that have been around since the first JV synths appeared on the market (JV-80 module?) and maybe even before that (U-220?). Pretty soon some of these samples will be so old they'll be exempt from a smog check, lol!

Don't expect those "legacy" / "backwards compatibility" -sounds ever to disappear from Roland synths. Even if you don't like them, they will be there so those some people who need them for their evil purposes can use them. Anyhow, there is over a thousand waveforms to choose from, so what if some of them are ones that you don't use. Those same legacy waves (as much as copyright can be avoided) can be found on almost every synth out there, right? Also, don't underestimate the power of 80's sounds revival through fashion cycles! :D

It's not 70s or 80s *sounds* that walk on my nerves (just the opposite), but 80s/90s ugly keyboard-minisample *sound* *quality*! Why is it still present in some crap waves and crap patches on the G? And why don't some silly Roland crew members finally get that notion? I guess they have ears just as we do. They should put it where it belongs: into the musical trash can, or if they can't live without it, into little Casio boxes or Bontempi children organs... ;-)

We will be able to live with it while disliking it, as long as there's enough good newer stuff on board, which obviously is (at least for most areas). But some of the old stuff is really beginning to smell a bit (not unusual for something which has been dead long enough now).

Looking forward to the *quality* stuff (old or new) on the G!

Which patches are you specifically talking about, Jimknopf? I find it rather ironic that a die-hard extreme Rhodes fanatic would have problems with any 'dated' sounds. You know what you like. You know what you want. Fine! However, like it or not, those
80s/90s ugly keyboard-minisample *sound* *quality
sounds are still used by creative musicians.
We will be able to live with it while disliking it . . .
It may be more appropriate to use the nominative 'I', in this case.

As an 'artist', I find it neither necessary or prudent to throw out 'old' colors just because I am offered a pallette of 'new' ones.

With great respect and a little bit of 'devil's advocate' ;>)

jim...i temd to agree with you on those lame sounds from that era..(alot on the jv series)...i too wonder why a company like roland(i know others seem to do it too) with this fine looking workstation dont just build all new samples and soundets to energize the whole g experience.....Like someone said here..it seems like it should have been total built around arx and forget the x stuff..i mean get an x if you want the x sounds....

THANKS GARETH!!! A LOT OF THANKS!!

Post by Danielo __ »

I am very grateful Gareth!!

Thanks for your excellent demos. You produced them in an
record time!!!

They were very helpful for me to really decide to buy the
G-8.

I live in Uruguay, a little country in South America, so I have to wait some more time to receive my G....I have a lot of time to listen yours and others demos of our Roland Clan friends.

I am probably receiving my G on november, december 2008.
Again , thank you a lot!!
You help me to know the G a little more and I am convinced
that it was a very sucessful work from Roland to develop this excellent keyboard!!!

Cheers Gareth!!! Cheers Roland!! And cheers all these very
good people from the ROLAND CLAN!!!

DANIELO, from URUGUAI

Ps: When I could have my G here, I promise I would produce my demos also and put them on this wonderful Forum

Gareth, not to be beating a dead horse but was your FG OS shipped without multisampling capability? How is the navigating compared to the FX in your opinion? Thanks
