Well once I've physically seen one and played it...but i'm pretty sure it will do what I require.

I don't consider myself part of the 'lunatic fringe '
In fact, The " G " is not on my shopping list for the year. I am getting the GX and I am top heavy with W/s ( M3M, XS and Extreme)
But If all I had was a Fantom X or the ES Motif, I would be 95% sure moving up to the G
I don't believe Roland has dropped the ball on the G. I think its a very smart choice. I also think it will pull folks away from the Oasys

the demo videos of the g make it sound JUST LIKE a juno-g. i am very happy with my juno-g. i don't need to spend $$$$ for the fancy color screen because juno-g has a really cool computer editor, and i have studio srx card, so its great.

Well..... Idunno
Initially....
I was pretty sure that I would be Trading the X for the G but as I have been reading over the manual these last couple days I am starting to have doubts....
Lets get one thing straight....the Fantom X was ALMOST perfect! I say this because with the exception of the HORRIBLE file system and maybe ONE or TWO other things, I cant find anything WRONG with that board!
That being said...I think Roland may have missed out on a HUGE opportunity to have one of the Greatest boards of ALL TIME. It would stand to reason (at least in MY mind) that they would have built upon the POSITIVE things about the X and taken away the Negative things when making the G but INSTEAD it seems that they went in a TOTALY DIFFERENT direction! This really confuses/disturbs me because as I read more about the G I actually realize that there are MORE things about the "G" that I dont like than the "X"...
Of course sound technology is a big thing with MOST people and will always be subjective...but I'll be damned if I didnt just have a studio session LAST WEEK where someone commented that the Bass sounds in my XP80 were "Fatter" and sounded Better than the ones in my "X"...and you know what.....I agree.
For this reason I feel that it is the OTHER features that will make or break the Fantom G......NOT THE SOUND!
I mean really....who the hell needs 128 MIDI TRACKS?????
I have never used all 16 + 8 Audio in the "X" and I separate EVERYTHING onto seperate tracks!
I really think that the new track count is overkill...and at what expense?
We lose multi sampling in favor of some new (yet unproven) "Sample set" technology...
We LOSE Midi MERGE and EXTRACT functions...which I used often. I dont know how you can NOT have those features with any engine that allows you to record more than one channel per track?
Now dont get me wrong....but we GAINED a lot of stuff too....MOST of which is either COSMETIC or UNFAMILIAR to use...so we are forced to start the learning curve all over again.....
I just dont know.....
Im gonna be up LATE doing my homework on this one....
DAMN

Usability reasons... IMHO Roland has overdone in that respect. For this reason I feel that it is the OTHER features that will make or break the Fantom G......NOT THE SOUND!
May be useful - tracking will be more similar to software sequencers. Limited number of tracks was a thing some were criticising sequencer in hardware workstations. Now there is one without such limits and some still aren't pleased. Go figure...I mean really....who the hell needs 128 MIDI TRACKS?????

I have to study G's manual further but you will be able to do some sampling in G. But... a full multisampling should be included of course. Perhaps in a next firmware revision? We lose multi sampling in favor of some new (yet unproven) "Sample set" technology...
With huge count of individual tracks it may not be needed as much. F-G has changed workflow apparently. We LOSE Midi MERGE and EXTRACT functions...which I used often. I dont know how you can NOT have those features with any engine that allows you to record more than one channel per track?
It's simple really - G is different than X. Unlike Yamaha with XS Roland has not given up to computer based DAW. At least not for midi tracking, ease of use and comfort. It's like software has gone to the hardware realm. Now dont get me wrong....but we GAINED a lot of stuff too....MOST of which is either COSMETIC or UNFAMILIAR to use...so we are forced to start the learning curve all over again.....

Re: Who is selling thier X in favour of the G
I won't sell my X for the G right now -
Just because the G has not be released yet, and i
want to try the new WS before considering to buy it.
Whatever the case, i would just get a G (once i checked
that it's a good product) keeping still my X.
More, the X could be just be improved still in the filesystem
with an OS update, a thing that i blame bad roland for not doing.

Nope not me either!
I have to many sequences to trade and then try to reproduce those sequences with the same or diffrent sounds.
But if The G has all the old patches from the X then they might have a buyer, cause I can buy it when it touches down.
But if not, NO, not until some updates or improvements!

Re: Who is selling thier X in favour of the G
I will keep my fantom X, I know it's got it's flaws but then so has my good lady and I haven't traded her in yet for a new model!
I'm actually thinking of getting a Alesis Fusion to go with my X, I have heard the Hollow sun patches and they are really good, though it doesn't have pattern sequencing so I keep the X for that.
It's also got a great VA built in, come roland if Alesis can do it I;m damn sure you can.

Actually what I will have to do is buy the G first ,transfer over all I've done on the X to the G,be it by SMF or reprogram the patches and then sell my X.
I like the challenge.
Like I said "Im a Sucker"

Same here...It will take at least a month to get the G set up so that I will not need the X anymore...

Re: Who is selling thier X in favour of the G
This is my first time posting so forgive me if I'm in the wrong section. I was interested in any opinions. I just purchased a FX8 new for total of $1990 including rebate, etc. I initially wanted a keyboard with great piano, electric piano, simple sequencer/recorder, metronome, rhythms, and whatever else was thrown in. I don't do any creating at this time but will probably try it out since the funtionality is there. From the comments I read on line, to complete the piano voices, I also ordered the SRX-11 and SRX-12 for a total of $470. I was debating whether or not to wait for the G8 but decided to take the FX8 home just to try it out. I've been using a Yamaha P80 which has been great but wanted to have more voices to play with. When I picked up the FX8 I made sure to have a return policy and still not sure if I should go for G8 instead. I'm guessing I would be able to get the G8 for about $2900 total. Any opinions would be appreciated, even though I may end up even more confused. From what I've been reading I have the impression that with the SRX boards I'll have a better variety of good piano voices with the FX8 than G8. The board is only for home use right now.

Would it be worth selling my Fantom s--- for a G?
