Thinking of upgrading to the MC-808

Post by DLAMusic »

Hi all.

Currently I own an MC303, JP8000 and microKORG. Haven't done too much in the way of music late but want to get back into it.

Really like the microKORG and was considering the EMX-1 because of the synthesis but the Roland for £100 more seems a bit easier to use and has many more features. Having used the MC303 for a bit I quite like it but seems a bit dated now.

So....how's the 808 compare to the 303 and EMX-1?

Also, want to use the sampler. What do I need to make quite a few samples? Do I need to upgrade the memory to 512meg then buy at least a 512meg CF card to store the recorded samples as I assume it can't store them in RAM?

How easier are they to get into? Eventually I'd like to mix recordings into Cubase then add stuff from the microKORG etc.

Thanks

I've got a SanDisk 1 gig CF Ultra speed(I think) card on the way.

If I keep it (think I will) then I'll defo get the 512 meg SD Ram too.

Expect more questions! :-P

I would go for the Korg ESX-1. Don't know why you're looking at the EMX-1 and not the ESX.

Get a smartcard reader for your computer. If you like the Microkorg, you'll love the ESX-1. No major bugs like the Rolands, and better sound quality (whatever compression you're using on these grooveboxes, Roland, ditch it). What you put in is what you get out. They're quite easy to use too, unlike Yamaha's stuff. As easy as Roland's stuff IMO. If you already use a computer and DAW, then the inadequacies of the ESX-1 won't matter to you much.

All Korg would have to do is make an ESX-2 with better polyphony, USB port, and better RAM, and they'd kick Roland's ass out of the "groove zone" for good.

Well went for the MC808. Very impressed so far with the sound quality and features....so much so the MC303 and JP8000 have gone. The microKorg is now a controller keyboard and hopefully lead sound source!
