The XT comes with a sheet of paper that expressly states "Do not remove rack ears." I wanted to do the same thing with mine, but opted not to do so due to the extremely loud warning from Roland.

Don't own an XT, but I can't imagine why you couldn't remove them for table-top use.

To enhance the look, you might be able to replace XT's rack ears with some nice wood:

I looked at removing mine from my new XT.

I think Roland has a warning because the way the ears are mounted, you need actually open up the chassis of the XT to get all of the screws removed.

If you just unscrew them without opening the chassis, you most likely will drop a washer or a screw inside the machine, which can cause malfunctions (shorts) or damage.

For now I decided not to remove them, but if I get some nerve, I will open up the machine and remove them for good.

I just went ahead and did it. You don't have to open the chassis, just remove the back cross bar (of the rack ears).

Unscrew the plastic slides on the sides, and all of the pivot screws on the sides, it comes off easy, with no danger of parts falling into the machine. You will have some loose plastic spinny things on the sides, but it's better than having those big ears!

Good evening to all people who own a V-Synth xt !
Well, when I started looking for a used V-Synth, a young man wanted to sell me one - with removed rack ears.
The reason why I didn´t buy this great machine was the missing of the serial number. This one is still on the metal plate on the back side of the xt !
This metal plate connects the two rack mounts together !
When you remove these ears, the V-Synt "looses" its serial number !

Greetings from Germany

With the rack ears gone, it looks like you could easily attach some wooden endbells to cover up the exposed sides and dress up the appearance.

Any plans for that?

Nice work ripe, but I prefer it with the ears..

Or the very good idea of wooden dress ;)
