Is it Wednesday yet?

Post by xjadams »

Hi all,

New to the forums, just wanted to introduce myself and ask my first question.

Is it Wednesday yet? 'Cause that is when my new X8 ships in ;)

Cheers for now...

Hey XJ, welcome. I'll give you the same advice that most new forum members get from the long-time members here: get plenty of rest between now and next Wednesday 'cause once that new workstation arrives, sleep will take a back seat to playing with your new Fantom!

In the meantime tell us a little about your playing style and experience, what you enjoy playing, what you enjoy learning, and what type of monitors/amplifiers you'll be using?

Oh yea, and when it does arrive, We Want Photos!

Resting Up

Post by xjadams »

Hi Still Learning,

I'll be sure and post up some digi's on Flickr when I get it (still not here yet...).

Background:

Classically trained pianist w/10 years of lessons, although the last lesson I took was 15 years ago. I also played keys in a rock band (Roland D-20, which I still have) for about 4 years in the late 80s/early 90s. We were nothing terribly serious or good, but we had fun.

I have a pretty good ear and reasonable composition skills, although I haven't used either for about 4 years (and then only for a year with another 10 year break prior to that).

I have a 4 year old daughter, who recently expressed interest in learning to play the piano, and since the X-8 has such great hammer action I was able to convince the wife that she could learn reasonably well on my new toy :)

I have pretty varied musical tastes; ranging from electronica, to rock, some country, a little rap, etc...

I haven't purchased monitors yet, although I'll be going with some powered monitors in the $300-$500 dollar range after my wife gets over her current $2900 heart attack. I'm open to suggestions.

Cheers!

Hey XJ, a 4 year old eh? good for you. My two daughters are 14 and 15. I still play Heart & Soul with my 14 year old. I highly recommend father-daughter duets.

Monitor recommendations are a very personal issue. Trust your ears, audition several, do not skimp, (you and I are both old enough to realize that you generally get what you pay for). I have been using a pair of Event TR5's for the past several years and I've recently been looking at upgrading. Lately, I've also been pumping my Fantom out thru a few different guitar amps and thru the amplifier/speakers in my 325 pound Yamaha Electone organ. Once you hear some really good monitors you tend to get spoiled a bit.

Enjoy your new board---It is Wednesday!!!

Post by Natural Black »

I recently got krk rp6s and I personally love them. Good fequency response. They are pretty loud too. however since im in an apt I cant play therm that loud but they are still excellent at low volumes as well(one of the reasons I got them) and $199 a piece for the rp6s

Musician's Apathy

Post by xjadams »

The trouble with music stores, is that they're usually staffed by musicians. Who, while having great talent, typically suffer in the execution department.

Thus, my order was not shipped until yesterday, and will not arrive until....

Wake me when it's Friday.

I can also vouch for KRK's. I got my X6 about 3-4 months ago and shopped pretty extensively for the right monitors. I listened to KRK RP6's and V6's at my local Guitar center. Although the RP6's sounded good, I was completely floored by the V6's! Unfortunately, they were about twice as much as the RP6's, so I didn't buy right away.

One of my primary concerns was getting enough bass sound without the use of a subwoofer. I just couldn't justify the extra space required or extra money to the wife, so I needed enough base from whatever monitors I ended up with. To me, the V6's had it, so I waited until I found a barely used pair locally on craigslist for $400 and pulled the trigger on them! Now that I have them plugged into my X6 I am completely satisfied with the sound... even without a sub. Sure, one day I may end up adding a sub, but at this point, I honestly can't see the need for it with the deep base I get from the V6's.

So true that sound is typically a personal taste issue. For me, I'd rather sacrifice a bit on the deep low end as long as have a crisp high-end with a good, tight base. The V6's deliver this, so I am not complaining.

Word of warning though... don't let anyone convince you what you "need" unless your own ears confirm it. I had a guy at a different GC (not the one I bought my X6 from) try like hell to get me into V8's AND a sub. When I told him I couldn't do the V8's, he decided to try and hard sell me on V6's plus a sub. He practically sounded insulted that I wasn't going to add a sub to my V6 setup... like it just wasn't ever done. This is obviously not the case as many people will swear to the opposite... that you do NOT need a sub as it may tend to corrupt the balance (depending on what kind of music you play).

Anyway, you already dropped nearly $3k on your X8 so my suggestion would be don't skimp on your monitors. I suggest listening to both the RP6's and the V6's and see what you think.

I have the KrK V6's.....

Best monitors you can buy in that price range IMHO.....

However I THOUGHT they had sufficient bass until I started getting BASS heavy mixes....

I realized that I need a sub so I added one.....The V6's themselves are VERY CLEAN though.....(The reason I chose them over the V8's) You have to realize that there is only SO much bass you can get out of a 6 inch woofer...lol

For My applications (R&B/Gospel/Hip Hop) there was not enough bass to translate well in my mixes.....adding the sub fixed the problem......for me.....maybe I was a little too lazy to just learn my monitors........LOL

Bottom line......

Krk V6's.............WORTH EVERY DIME!!!!
